Curtain Raiser: Launch Of Y – 12654 (Mahendragiri)                                 

  • Mahendragiri, the last Project 17A Frigate, launched by Dr (Smt.) Sudesh Dhankhar, wife of Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, at M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai on 01 Sep 23.
  • Mahendragiri, named after a mountain peak in Eastern Ghats located in the state of Orissa, is the seventh ship of the Project 17A Frigates. These warships are follow-ons of the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class), with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors.
  • Under the Project 17A program, a total of four ships by M/s MDL and three ships by M/s GRSE are under construction. The first six ships of the project have been launched so far by MDL & GRSE, between 2019-2023.
  • Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the pioneer organization for all warship design activities. Aligning with the country’s resolute commitment to ‘AatmaNirbharata’, a substantial 75% of the orders for equipment and systems of Project 17A ships have been ordered on indigenous firms, including MSMEs.

Fighter Jets, Missiles, Awacs: How IAF Plans To Protect Delhi During G20                                     

  • In preparation for the upcoming G20 summit scheduled for September 9-10, the IAF is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the security of the airspace over the Delhi-National Capital Region.
  • IAF has deployed an impressive array of assets, including fighter jets, surface-to-air missile systems, anti-drone systems, airborne early-warning and control systems, and various sensors to safeguard the event.
  • “The IAF’s Operations Direction Centre (ODC), in coordination with the Joint Control and Analysis Centre (JCAC) and other relevant agencies, will consolidate all air surveillance data to detect potential threats. These threats could range from small, slow-moving drones to large, fast-moving aircraft.”
  • Front-line fighter aircraft, including Rafales, Mirage-2000s, and Su-30MKIs, will maintain a vigilant presence in the skies over the Delhi-NCR. Additionally, several airbases in the region, including Ambala, Bareilly, Sirsa, Bhatinda, Gwalior, and others, will keep Operational Readiness Platforms on standby 24/7.

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Takes Over As Air Officer-in-charge Personnel          

  • Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor took over as Air Officer-in-Charge Personnel (AOP) on 01 Sep 23. On the occasion of taking over, he laid wreath at the National War Memorial and paid homage to those who have made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
  • An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College and National Defence College, the Air Marshal was commissioned in the fighter stream of Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force on 06 December 1986. In a career spanning over 36 years, the Air Marshal has held various key field and staff appointments.
  • Prior to his present appointment, he was Senior Air Staff Officer at HQ Central Air Command, Prayagraj.
  • In recognition for his meritorious services, he was awarded Vayu Sena Medal in 2008 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 by the Hon’ble President of India.

Rajasthan: Brazilian Army General Witnesses Firepower Demonstration   

  • Brazilian Army General Tomas Miguel Mine Ribeiro Paiva witnessed a firepower demonstration in Rajasthan’s Pokhran carried out by the Indigenous Weapon Systems.
  • During the demonstration, several Indigenous Weapon Systems including Arjun tanks and ALH Dhruv showcased their might.
  • The Brazilian Army General also witnessed the demonstration of the firing of the Akash Missile system along with other indigenous systems.
  • The visiting dignitary also showed keen interest in the ‘Made In India’ platforms as part of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The visit of General Tomas Miguel Mine Ribeiro Paiva underlines the deep-rooted bond between the armies of India and Brazil. This visit not only strengthens military cooperation but also reinforces the commitment of both nations to collaborative security efforts, global peace and prosperity, the Ministry stated.

Lt. Gen Ajith Nilakantan Assumed Appointment of Commandant of Army’s R&R Hospital
•Lieutenant General Ajith Nilakantan will assume the appointment of Commandant, Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi.
•Prior to assuming the present appointment, he held the post of Director of General Hospital Services (Armed Forces). An alumnus of Trivandrum Medical College, the General Officer was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps on April 16, 1987.
•For his meritorious service, he was awarded with General Officer Commanding in Chief Commendation in 2013 and Chief of Army Staff Commendation in 2014.
