17th India-Germany Military Cooperation Subgroup Meeting
- The 17th edition of the India-Germany Military Cooperation Subgroup (MCSG) meeting was held from 01-02 Oct 24 at Berlin, Germany. Discussions focused on new initiatives to further enhance the scope of bilateral military cooperation and to strengthen ongoing defence engagements across the spectrum.
- The MCSG is a forum established to boost defence cooperation between both nations through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels between Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff, and the Department of International Cooperation Armed Forces, Germany.
- India-Germany Defence Cooperation Agreement (2006) provides a framework for bilateral defence cooperation.
- To further enhance the Defence Industry and defence cooperation between Germany and India, an Arrangement on Implementation of the Agreement, concerning Bilateral Defence Cooperation was signed on February 12, 2019 during the visit of Raksha Mantri to Berlin
- The agreement will enable both the countries to share classified information with each other
- India and Germany maintain an ongoing dialogue in the areas of commercial maritime security and cooperation in the field of anti-terrorism
- Germany is India’s largest trading partner in Europe, with a total trade of USD 21.07 Billion in 2020-21, occupying 17.4% of share in European Market
- Germany is the 7th largest foreign direct investor in India since April 2000
- Germany’s total FDI in India from 2000 until 2019 amounted to US$ 11.9 billion
- In 2021 India imported €946M and exported €944M from Germany, resulting in a negative trade balance of €1.8M
Deadly Israeli Strike On Central Beirut
- Israel carried out a deadly air raid Thursday on a Hezbollah rescue facility in central Beirut, Lebanese sources said, after multiple Israeli ground troops were killed near the border.
- The second strike targeting the capital’s centre this week follows Iran launching its largest missile attack yet on its arch-foe Israel, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to warn Tehran would pay for its “big mistake”.
- Iran, which backs Hezbollah, said it would step up its response if Israel retaliates, defying calls for de-escalation in a war that has cost more than 1,000 lives in Lebanon.
Biden Says He Will Not Support Israeli Attack On Iran’s Nuclear Sites
- President Joe Biden says he will not support an Israeli attack on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear programme. “The answer is no,” Biden said Wednesday, when asked if he would support such retaliation after Iran fired about 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday.
- Biden’s comments came after he and fellow Group of Seven leaders spoke by phone on Wednesday to discuss coordinating new sanctions against Iran.
- The White House said in a statement that the G7 leaders “unequivocally condemned Iran’s attack against Israel” and Biden reiterated the United States’ “full solidarity and support to Israel and its people.”
NSA Doval Meets French President
- NSA Ajit Doval called on French President Emmanuel Macron and said they reiterated their commitment to implement the India-France Horizon 2047 roadmap.
- Doval also met Emmanuel Chiva, DG of the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.Earlier on Tuesday, Doval held a meeting with French Minister for the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu and held discussions on defence cooperation, including the Rafale Marine, Scorpene submarines, space, and international situation, especially Ukraine.According to sources, Ajit Doval is in Paris to discuss the Rafale deal after France submitted the final detailed offer for the Indian Navy’s fighter aircraft fleet.
- The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has already given its approval for the purchase, paving the way for a significant boost to India’s naval arsenal.
HAL Delivers First AL-31FP Aero Engine to IAF
- HAL handed over the first AL-31FP Aero Engine, manufactured under a 240 engine contract, to IAF on September 30 at Koraput, Odisha.
- The contract for 240 AL-31FP Aero Engines for Su-30MKI aircraft was signed with HAL on September 9, 2024. These engines would be delivered in eight years.
- “During this entire engine manufacturing process, we aim to engage Indian industries from present level of work share from 40 percent to more than 50 per cent in next two-three years and help in employment generation.”
