Operation ‘Kiya’ and Key Developments in India’s Defence and Space Sector
India has witnessed significant developments across internal security, defence manufacturing, aerospace collaboration, and space exploration in recent times. From successful counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir to major strides in indigenous aircraft production and space missions, these events underline the country’s growing strategic capabilities.
Operation ‘Kiya’: Major Blow to Terror Networks
Security forces achieved a crucial success in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district with the completion of Operation ‘Kiya’, a prolonged counter-terror mission carried out in the Ramnagar–Basantgarh region. Acting on precise intelligence, joint teams of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force traced two Pakistani terrorists hiding inside a cave in the higher reaches of the area.
A fierce encounter followed, lasting over 20 hours, during which several loud explosions were heard as forces closed in on the hideout. Among the terrorists neutralised was Rubani alias Abu Mavia, a senior commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group who had been active in the region for several years. One body was found near the cave entrance, while the second was recovered from deep inside. Although the operation has concluded, the Army confirmed that surveillance in the area continues to prevent any regrouping of militants.
This operation comes amid intensified anti-terror drives in the Jammu region, where multiple encounters in Kathua and Kishtwar districts earlier resulted in the elimination of another top JeM operative, Usman of Pakistan, though the forces also suffered casualties during these actions.
PM Modi Likely to Officiate First C295 Rollout
In a major boost to the Make in India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to officiate the rollout of the first C295 military transport aircraft assembled in India later this year. The aircraft will be delivered from the Tata-Airbus assembly line located in Vadodara to the Ministry of Defence.
This project marks the first time a military aircraft is being manufactured in India by a private consortium. About 70% of the aircraft’s components are sourced domestically, while the remaining parts, including the engine, are imported. Under the contract, the Vadodara facility will supply 40 aircraft to the Indian Air Force, while 16 have already been delivered from Airbus’s Spanish plant. In the future, the Indian facility is also expected to cater to regional export markets.
Private Sector Leads Fifth-Generation Fighter Jet Race
India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme has entered a new phase, with three private-sector consortiums shortlisted to develop the country’s indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter. State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has reportedly been excluded from the final list, though it has not received official confirmation.
The Defence Ministry is expected to issue a formal request for proposals to the shortlisted players soon, with the first prototype likely to be ready within the next few years. Designed as a twin-engine stealth aircraft with advanced avionics, sensor fusion, and manned-unmanned teaming capabilities, the AMCA is projected to become a core component of the Indian Air Force from the mid-2030s.
Lockheed Martin Eyes India for C-130J Assembly
Global defence major Lockheed Martin is deepening its engagement with India by expanding its supplier base and considering the establishment of a C-130J Super Hercules final assembly line in the country. If approved, this would be the first such assembly facility outside the United States and would cater to both Indian Air Force requirements and export markets.
Lockheed Martin currently works with over 500 Indian suppliers, including a large number of MSMEs. Its joint venture with Tata in Hyderabad already serves as the sole global supplier of C-130J empennage assemblies, showcasing India’s growing role in high-precision aerospace manufacturing.
ISRO Prepares for PSLV Relaunch in June
India’s space agency, ISRO, is preparing to relaunch the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in June after facing two consecutive mission failures. Despite these rare setbacks, officials have ruled out sabotage and clarified that the issues were technical in nature, with each failure stemming from unrelated causes.
ISRO has constituted multiple expert committees to analyse the problems and implement corrective measures. Engineers are working against tight deadlines to ensure the rocket’s readiness. Confidence in the space agency remains strong, as international clients continue to place trust in ISRO’s capabilities despite recent challenges.
