US Congress Clears $200 Million Security Assistance for Baltic Nations

The United States has approved a USD 200 million security assistance package for the Baltic countries—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—amid rising concerns over Russia’s military posture near NATO’s eastern borders. The funding has been sanctioned under the Fiscal Year 2026 Defence Appropriations Act, reflecting Washington’s continued strategic commitment to its Eastern European allies.

The legislation, signed into law on 3 February 2026, ensures the continuation of the Baltic Security Initiative (BSI), even after earlier discussions within the US Defence Department about winding down the programme. The allocated funds form part of the massive USD 838.7 billion US defence budget for FY2026.

The Baltic Security Initiative focuses on boosting military readiness, enhancing interoperability with NATO forces, and supporting defence modernisation efforts in the region. This move strengthens regional deterrence at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

India–Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise KHANJAR-XIII

India and Kyrgyzstan will conduct the 13th edition of the joint Special Forces exercise, KHANJAR-XIII, from 4 to 17 February 2026 at Misamari in Assam. First initiated in 2011, Exercise KHANJAR is held annually to deepen defence cooperation between the two nations.

The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, operational coordination, and mutual understanding between the Special Forces of both countries. Misamari, a key military training area in Northeast India, offers varied terrain ideal for simulating realistic combat scenarios and counter-terrorism operations.

Mega Rafale Fighter Jet Deal Likely to Move Forward

India’s proposed acquisition of 114 additional Rafale fighter jets is expected to be taken up by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in the coming days and is likely to receive preliminary approval. The development comes just ahead of the scheduled visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India.

The proposal has already been cleared by the Defence Procurement Board and, once approved by the DAC, will move into the stage of technical and commercial negotiations. The Indian Air Force currently operates with around 30 fighter squadrons, significantly short of its authorised strength of 42 squadrons.

Growing regional security challenges, including increased coordination between Pakistan and China, have intensified the need to strengthen air combat capabilities. The deal aims to fulfil the IAF’s long-term requirement for 4.5-generation multirole fighter aircraft, with nearly 80 per cent of the jets planned to be manufactured in India, boosting indigenous defence production.

Indian Army Renames Colonial-Era Infrastructure

In a significant step towards shedding colonial legacies, the Indian Army has renamed 246 roads, buildings, and facilities across its establishments. The initiative seeks to reinforce an institutional identity rooted in India’s own history, values, and military traditions.

The renaming exercise covers 124 roads, 77 colonies, 27 buildings and military facilities, and 18 other installations, including parks, training areas, gates, and helipads. The new names honour India’s gallantry award winners, war heroes, and distinguished military leaders.

This move aligns with broader national efforts to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of the country’s armed forces, including dedicated recognitions of Param Vir Chakra awardees.
