Project Deepak Marks 66 Years of Service
Project Deepak, one of the oldest initiatives under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), celebrated its 66th Raising Day on May 4, 2026, in Shimla. Established in 1961, the project has played a crucial role in building and maintaining strategic infrastructure across the rugged terrains of Himachal Pradesh.
Its area of responsibility includes key districts such as Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti. Over the decades, Project Deepak has contributed significantly to the development of vital road networks, including the historic Hindustan–Tibet Road and important stretches of the Manali–Leh highway. These routes are not only essential for civilian connectivity but also critical for military logistics in high-altitude regions.
Apart from infrastructure development, the project has been actively involved in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. During natural calamities, BRO teams have carried out several rescue missions. In 2023, they successfully evacuated hundreds of stranded civilians from Baralacha La Pass and Chandrataal, demonstrating their operational readiness in extreme conditions.
US Approves F-16 Radar Upgrade for Pakistan
The United States has approved a major upgrade program for Pakistan’s fleet of F-16 fighter aircraft, a move that could have strategic implications for South Asia. Pakistan currently operates approximately 75–85 F-16 jets, and the upgrade focuses on enhancing their radar and combat capabilities.
The contract, valued at $488 million, has been awarded to Northrop Grumman. It involves engineering and technical support under the US Air Force’s Foreign Military Sales programme. Additionally, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency had earlier notified the US Congress in December 2025 regarding a broader $686 million package for sustaining and upgrading Pakistan’s F-16 fleet.
This development is seen as a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s aerial combat capabilities. The timing is particularly notable, as it coincides with diplomatic engagements involving the United States and regional players, reflecting Washington’s continued strategic involvement in the region.
MIDHANI Opens Advanced Aerospace Fasteners Facility
Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Aerospace Fasteners Facility at its plant in Hyderabad. This development represents a major step forward in strengthening India’s domestic capabilities in defence and aerospace manufacturing.
The facility is equipped with advanced technologies such as automated warm and hot head forging systems, thread rolling machines, and fillet rolling systems. These technologies enable the production of high-performance fasteners using materials like steel, titanium, and superalloys, ensuring durability and reliability in extreme aerospace environments.
The inauguration was led by Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production), along with senior officials of MIDHANI. The initiative aligns with national programs like ‘Make in India’ and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities in critical sectors.
Pixxel to Launch India’s First Orbital Data Centre Satellite
Indian space-tech startup Pixxel has announced a groundbreaking initiative to launch the country’s first orbital data centre satellite. The company has partnered with Sarvam to develop this innovative system.
Under the collaboration, Pixxel will handle the design, launch, and operation of the satellite, named “Pathfinder,” while Sarvam will provide advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. The satellite will feature datacentre-grade GPUs, enabling real-time data processing and AI inference directly in space—something not typically possible with conventional satellites.
The 200 kg-class Pathfinder satellite is expected to be launched by the fourth quarter of 2026. The mission aims to test high-performance computing in orbit, including challenges related to power management, thermal regulation, and real-time data workflows.
This project represents a significant leap in space technology, as it seeks to establish the foundation for future orbital data centres. Such systems could revolutionize how satellite data is processed, reducing latency and enabling faster, more efficient decision-making for applications ranging from climate monitoring to defence intelligence.
