MoD Signs ₹1,476 Crore Deal with BEL
The Ministry of Defence has entered into a major contract worth ₹1,476 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hyderabad, for the supply of five advanced ground-based mobile electronic systems to the Indian Army. This procurement falls under the “Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category, ensuring a minimum of 72% indigenous content.
The agreement was formalised in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. These systems are expected to significantly improve operational readiness and strengthen India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem. The move aligns with the government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Armenia in Talks to Acquire Pralay Missile
India is in advanced negotiations with Armenia for the export of the indigenously developed Pralay Missile. This short-range, surface-to-surface missile represents one of India’s most sophisticated defence exports.
Developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile features high precision, speeds exceeding Mach 6, and advanced manoeuvrability. While the domestic version has a range of up to 500 km, the export variant is limited to 290 km in accordance with Missile Technology Control Regime norms.
This deal is part of Armenia’s broader effort to strengthen its military capabilities amid regional security concerns, particularly in response to advanced missile systems deployed by Azerbaijan. It also highlights India’s growing footprint in the global defence export market, especially as Armenia has already procured systems like Pinaka rockets and Akash missiles from India.
Vietnam Likely to Finalise ₹5,800 Crore BrahMos Deal
Vietnam is expected to conclude a major ₹5,800 crore deal with India for the acquisition of the BrahMos Missile system during the visit of President To Lam to New Delhi.
The proposed agreement includes shore-based missile systems, training support, and logistics assistance. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is known for its supersonic speed of Mach 2.8 and precision targeting capabilities, making it highly effective for coastal defence.
If finalised, Vietnam will become one of the key Southeast Asian nations to deploy this advanced missile system, joining countries like the Philippines. This deal will significantly enhance Vietnam’s maritime security while strengthening India’s role as a reliable defence partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
DRDO Establishes AMCA Manufacturing Hub in Andhra Pradesh
In a landmark move, DRDO has secured 600 acres of land in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, to set up a manufacturing facility for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). This project, valued at approximately ₹1 lakh crore, marks a major step towards India’s aerospace self-reliance.
The AMCA is a fifth-generation stealth fighter designed with advanced features such as supercruise capability, stealth technology, and network-centric warfare systems. Around 140 aircraft are expected to be produced in the initial phase, with future expansion plans already in place.
The Aeronautical Development Agency will continue to manage design and testing operations, while final assembly will take place in Andhra Pradesh. The first prototype is expected between 2028 and 2029, with full-scale production likely by 2035. The Indian Air Force plans to induct around 250 aircraft over time.
US ‘Project Freedom’ Put on Hold
On the global front, the United States recently considered launching “Project Freedom” to secure maritime traffic through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The operation aimed to counter Iran’s influence over the region and ensure safe passage for commercial vessels.
The plan involved deploying significant military assets, including warships, aircraft, and thousands of personnel. However, former US President Donald Trump decided to temporarily suspend the initiative to avoid escalating tensions and to allow room for diplomatic negotiations.
This development highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, especially as global energy security remains closely tied to stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
