Missile Frigate INS Tushil inducted into Indian Navy

  • Indian Navy’s Russian-manufactured guided missile frigate INS Tushil was commissioned into the force at Russia’s coastal city of Kaliningrad on Monday.
  • INS Tushil is expected to significantly bolster the Indian Navy’s operational capability in the Indian Ocean, a region that has witnessed increasing forays by China’s PLA Navy in the last few years.
  • The warship has been constructed in Russia as part of an over USD 2.5-billion deal that New Delhi had inked with Moscow in 2016 for four stealth frigates for the Indian Navy. INS Tushil is an upgraded Krivak III class frigate of Project 1135.6.

Kharga Kamikaze, Indian Army’s High-Speed Drone

  • The Indian Army has developed ‘Kharga’ Kamikaze drone, an aero system capable of being deployed in intelligence and surveillance roles. The drone is a high-speed and low-weight aerial vehicle with a speed of 40 m/s.
  • ‘Kharga’ can carry up to 700 grams of explosives and is equipped with GPS, a navigation system, and a high-definition camera. It also reportedly has countermeasures for enemy electromagnetic spectrum jamming.
  • The drone has a range of about one and a half kilometres.
  • Known as a kind of ‘suicide’ drone, it can easily destroy enemy targets. According to officials, ‘Kharga’ does not come under the radar range.
  • The drone has been built at a cost of ₹ 30,000.
  • In August, the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) launched potent ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous) Kamikaze drones – do-and-die unmanned aerial vehicles with home-built engines that can power them to fly up to 1,000 kilometres. The aerial vehicles have been used extensively by the Ukrainians to target Russian infantry and armoured vehicles.
  • ‘Dronaam’ neutralised 55% drones
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the BSF has been able to neutralise 55 percent of drones along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab using ‘Dronaam’, India’s indigenous counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS).
  • Developed by Gurutvaa Systems, ‘Dronaam’ is a cutting-edge modular C-UAS designed to offer foolproof protection against illegal unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Tel Aviv Says It Will Destroy Syria’s Strategic Weaponry

  • Israel will step up airstrikes on Syrian stores of advanced weaponry, Israeli officials said, and keep a ‘limited’ troop presence on the ground, hoping to head off any threat that could emerge in the fallout of president Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow.
  • Israel has watched the upheaval in Syria with a mixture of hope and concern as it weighs the consequences of one of the most significant strategic shifts in the Middle East in years. While Assad’s fall wiped out a bastion from which Israel’s arch-foe Iran had exercised influence in the region, the lightning advance of a disparate group of rebel forces with roots in the Islamist ideology of Al Qaeda poses risks.
  • A senior Israeli official said airstrikes would persist in the coming days, while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel had no interest in interfering in internal Syrian affairs and was concerned only with defending its citizens.
