India Clears Mega Deals Worth Rs 80,000 Crore

  • In a mega boost for the Indian Navy and surveillance capabilities of the defence forces, the Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared the major deals for building two nuclear submarines indigenously and buying 31 Predator drones from the US.
  • As per the plans, the Indian Navy will get two nuclear-powered attack submarines which will help boost its capabilities manifold in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The deal for building the two submarines at the Ship Building Centre in Vishakhapatnam will be around Rs 45,000 crore and will see a major involvement of private sector firms like Larsen and Toubro.
  • India has plans of having six such boats in the long run as part of its submarine induction plans.
  • These boats which are going to be built under the ambitious Project Advanced Technology Vessel project, are separate from the five nuclear submarines being built under the Arihant class at the same location.
  • The other mega deal cleared today by the Cabinet Committee on Security is for the acquisition of 31 Predator drones from American General Atomics under a Foreign Military Sales contract between the two governments.
  • The Indian Navy will get 15 of the 31 drones while the Army and the IAF will get eight each and also deploy them together at two bases in Uttar Pradesh.

Indian Navy Signs MoU With Bajaj Allianz

  • IN has accordingly entered into an MoU with Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company for offering diverse product portfolio including Term Insurance to Naval Civilians at affordable premiums with various options.
  • 2024 has been declared ‘Year of Naval Civilians’ by Indian Navy in order to provide thrust to new initiatives and effectively improve the overall work environment for Naval Civilians. Welfare measures to enhance quality of life is a major focus area in the Year of Naval Civilians.
  • Indian Navy is committed to excellence, innovation, adaptability and enhanced functional efficiency in HR management of Civilian Personnel and one of the key objectives to achieve this goal is fostering a culture of inclusivity and inculcating strong sense of belongingness by instituting various welfare measures.

Government Bans Hizb-ut-Tahrir

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs designated Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) as a banned entity. The official notification stated that the group seeks to establish an Islamic state and caliphate worldwide through jihad and terrorism and was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Preventions) Act of 1967.
  • The ministry highlighted that HuT promotes terrorism through social media, secure messaging apps, and ‘Dawah’ meetings, targeting impressionable individuals to engage in violent acts.
  • The notification also emphasised that HuT’s goal of overthrowing democratically elected governments poses a serious threat to India’s democratic framework and internal security.
  • The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) is the law designed to prevent and address unlawful and terrorist activities. Enacted to enhance homeland security, the act facilitates the prosecution of individuals involved in actions that threaten the state or its citizens.

62nd Anniversary of Battle of Walong

  • As the nation prepares to pay homage to the valiant soldiers who fought in the Battle of Walong during 1962 Sino-Indian War in Arunachal Pradesh, the Eastern most valley of India, the Indian Army is all set to commence a month-long series of commemorative events marking the 62nd Walong Day.
  • The commemoration will begin on October 17, 2024, and will continue till November 14, 2024, honouring the indomitable spirit, sacrifice and courage of the heroes who defended the Eastern front of our nation.
  • This year’s commemoration promises a vibrant mix of activities aimed at engaging the local communities and honouring the memory of the fallen heroes.

Israel Army Says Top Islamic Jihad Commander Killed

  • The military said Mohammad Abdullah was “eliminated” on Thursday after Israeli aircraft struck the camp in Tulkarem.
  • An additional “terrorist” was killed in the operation, which recovered M-16 rifles and vests, it added.
  • Abdullah was the successor of Muhammad Jabber, also known as Abu Shujaa, who was killed in an Israeli strike in late August.
  • Islamic Jihad is an ally of Hamas, with both groups battling Israeli forces in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
  • Israeli officials say at least 24 Israelis, civilians or members of the security forces, have been killed in attacks carried out by Palestinian militants or in Israeli military operations over the same period in the West Bank.
