Defence Current Affairs 14 March 2026
Sagar Defence to Build India’s First Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding Centre
Sagar Defence Engineering, a defence technology firm headquartered in Mumbai, has initiated the construction of India’s first Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Centre. The foundation ceremony for this advanced facility took place at the fishing harbour of Juvvaladinne in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
The state government has allocated 29.58 acres of land at the harbour for the project. Being located close to the sea will allow the company to efficiently carry out shipbuilding activities such as vessel construction, launch, testing, and deployment.
The upcoming centre will focus on developing next-generation autonomous maritime technologies. These include:
- Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs)
- Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
- Intelligent navigation systems
- Advanced maritime sensors
- Secure communication networks
- Integrated command-and-control systems
These technologies aim to enable maritime platforms to operate with minimal human involvement, thereby improving safety, operational efficiency, and mission effectiveness in both defence and commercial maritime operations.
An important technological feature of the new shipyard will be the use of digital twin technology. Through this system, engineers will create virtual models of ships and shipyard infrastructure. These digital replicas will help simulate vessel performance, test upgrades, and improve designs before actual construction, reducing development time and costs.
Japan Plans to Join the U.S. “Golden Dome” Missile Defence Initiative
Japan is expected to announce its intention to participate in the “Golden Dome” missile defence programme proposed by Donald Trump, the President of the United States.
According to reports, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may confirm the plan during a summit meeting with the U.S. President in Washington, D.C. on March 19.
About the Golden Dome Programme
The Golden Dome is an ambitious missile defence initiative designed to build a multi-layered defensive shield capable of countering various types of aerial threats. These include:
- Hypersonic missiles
- Ballistic missiles
- Cruise missiles
- Armed drones
The system will combine ground-based interceptor missiles with space-based sensors and interceptors. Thousands of satellites could be deployed in orbit to detect and destroy missiles soon after they are launched.
The concept draws inspiration from earlier strategic defence projects such as the Strategic Defense Initiative launched by Ronald Reagan during the Cold War. It also resembles Israel’s well-known missile defence system:
- Iron Dome – a short-range ground-based air defence system.
However, the Golden Dome aims to provide protection not only from land but also through sea and space-based monitoring systems, making it far more comprehensive.
Possible Role of Japan
Japan may contribute by manufacturing or jointly developing missiles to replenish U.S. defence stocks that have been reduced due to military support to allies and conflicts in different regions.
Japan has already demonstrated a shift in its defence export policy by supplying Patriot surface-to-air missiles manufactured under license to the United States, marking a significant change from its earlier restrictions on exporting lethal weapons.
Kerala Robotics Start-up Genrobotics Secures ₹80 Crore Global Contract
Genrobotics Innovations, an AI-driven robotics start-up based in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, has secured an international contract worth approximately ₹80 crore from Public Utilities Board (PUB), the national water agency of Singapore.
Under this agreement, the company will deploy around 44 specialised robots to modernize Singapore’s water infrastructure over the next two financial years.
The primary technology involved is the Wilboar robotic rover, a machine designed to operate in dangerous and confined environments such as:
- Sewer wells
- Stormwater drains
- Industrial storage tanks
These robots are capable of performing cleaning and inspection tasks that would otherwise expose human workers to hazardous conditions.
Competitive Global Selection
Genrobotics secured the contract after an 18-month evaluation process involving over 600 global competitors, highlighting the company’s advanced capabilities in robotics and artificial intelligence.
The company has already filed 14 patents and is recognized for integrating AI with robotics to tackle complex sanitation challenges.
In terms of financial performance, the company reported ₹32 crore revenue in FY25 and expects around 30% growth in the current year. With expanding global demand, Genrobotics aims to become a ₹500 crore enterprise within the next two years.
Operation True Promise 4 Escalates Middle East Conflict
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced the 48th phase of its ongoing retaliatory campaign known as Operation True Promise 4.
According to reports from Press TV, the operation targeted multiple Israeli and American facilities across the region.
The strikes reportedly focused on strategic locations including:
- Galilee
- Golan Heights
- Haifa
Some American military installations in the region were also targeted during the operation.
The attack involved the use of advanced weapons such as:
- Kheibar Shekan solid-fuel missiles
- Qadr liquid-fuel ballistic missiles
- Attack drones
The strikes were reportedly coordinated with the Lebanese militant organization Hezbollah, highlighting the growing regional tensions.
Iran Allows LPG Tankers Bound for India to Pass Through Strait of Hormuz
Amid tensions in the Middle East, Iran has allowed two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers bound for India to pass safely through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement followed comments by Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, who suggested that Indian vessels could receive safe passage through the route despite the ongoing conflict in the region.
Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime energy corridors. Nearly 20% of the global oil and gas supply passes through this narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.
Any disruption to shipping through the strait can significantly affect global energy prices and international trade. For India, which imports a large portion of its crude oil from the Gulf region, stability in this route is particularly important for energy security.
Iran’s decision to allow Indian tankers to pass reflects the strategic and economic ties between India and Iran, as well as their shared interest in maintaining smooth maritime trade routes.
