1st All-women CISF Battalion

  • Amit Shah has said that the government has approved 1st all-women battalion of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
  • The Central Industrial Security Force has been a preferred choice for women who wish to serve the nation in Central Armed Police Force. The number of women in CISF is more than 7% at present.
  • The CISF HQs has started preparations for the early recruitment, training and selection of location for the HQs of the new Battalion. The training is being specially designed to create an elite Battalion capable of performing multifarious role as Commandoes in VIP security and also security of airports, Delhi Metro Rail duties.

Exercise ‘SEA VIGIL-24’

  • The Indian Navy is set to conduct the fourth edition of the ‘Pan-India’ Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-24’ on 20 & 21 Nov 24.
  • The fourth edition of Ex Sea Vigil will span an unprecedented scale, both in terms of geographical reach and the magnitude of participation, with involvement of 06 Ministries and 21 Organisations/ agencies.
  • Originally conceptualised in 2018, Sea Vigil was designed to validate and enhance measures adopted to bolster Coastal Defence, post the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
  • Serving as a precursor to the Theatre Level Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX), conducted biennially by the Indian Navy, Sea Vigil-24 will serve as an essential measure in reinforcing India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime boundaries.

35th Tri-services Commanders’ Conference

  • Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan chaired the 35th Tri services Commanders’ Conference (TSTCC) at Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 13 November 2024.
  • The Conference was attended by Commanders of all three services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and Officers from various formations across the services.
  • Taking forward the agenda set forth in the 34th TSTCC held in Shimla last year, the 35th edition reviewed the progress and outlined future plans to optimise training facilities across all three services for joint training.

India Ships First Akash System Battery To Armenia

  • India marks another milestone in its defence export as it shipped the first Akash weapon system battery to Armenia. This is the second missile system to have been exported.
  • The Akash system, developed by the DRDO is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) which can hit targets like fighter jets, missiles (cruise, air-to-surface), drones and other aerial assets to a range of 25km.Manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), each battery of Akash weapon system is accompanied by a single Rajendra 3D passive electronically scanned array radar and four launchers with three missiles each, all of which are interlinked.
  • In 2022, Armenia inked a deal with India to procure 15 Akash missile systems worth around Rs 6,000 crore. It must be noted that Armenia has become the first foreign country to buy this missile system.

Ex Poorvi Prahar

  • The Indian Army is conducting a high-intensity tri-services exercise, Ex Poorvi Prahar, from November 10 to 18, 2024 in the forward areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • This large-scale, joint exercise aims to hone the combat effectiveness of the Indian Army, Navy, and IAF in executing Integrated Joint Operations in the challenging mountainous terrain of the region, thereby enhancing inter-service coordination and operational readiness.
  • Ex Poorvi Prahar is the integration of innovative technologies that are reshaping the future of military operations.

Italian ‘Black Shark’ Back In Contest For Navy’s Torpedo Need

  • Italian ‘Black Shark’ torpedo, which courted controversy more than a decade ago after it came under allegations of corruption and irregularities, is back in contention for an Indian Navy requirement of heavy weight torpedoes for the Kalvari class submarines.
  • Manufactured by Leonardo, erstwhile Finmeccanica, the torpedo is being considered for the requirement of 48 heavyweight torpedoes after the Italian company was taken off the blacklist. Other options for the estimated ₹3,000 crore contract are from Germany and France.
  • The Kalvari-class submarines, formally classified as the Project-75 submarines (P-75), is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines operated by the Indian Navy.
