INS Nirdeshak To Be Commissioned at Vizag

  • The Indian Navy’s latest survey ship — INS Nirdeshak — that boasts over “80 per cent indigenous content”, reaffirming the naval force’s focus towards Aatmanirbharta, is all set to be commissioned at Visakhapatnam on December 18.
  • The commissioning ceremony will be presided over by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth.
  • The ship, built at GRSE Kolkata, boasts over 80 per cent indigenous content, reaffirming India’s expertise in ship design and construction and the Indian Navy’s focus towards ‘Aatmanirbharta’, he said.
  • The 110-meter-long vessel, with a displacement of approximately 3,800 tonnes, is powered by two diesel engines and is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic survey equipment.
  • ‘Nirdeshak’, the second ship of the Survey Vessel (Large) Project, is designed to conduct hydrographic surveys, aid in navigation and support maritime operations.
  • With an endurance of over 25 days at sea and a top speed exceeding 18 knots, INS Nirdeshak is set to enhance India’s maritime capabilities.

India-Malaysia Conclude Exercise Harimau Shakti

  • India and Malaysia concluded exercise Harimau Shakti at Bentong Camp in Malaysia on Sunday.
  • The Indian contingent, represented by 78 personnel from the MAHAR Regiment, is joined by a Malaysian team of 123 personnel from the Royal Malaysian Regiment. Harimau Shakti is an annual training event conducted alternately in India and Malaysia. The previous edition took place in November 2023 at Umroi Cantonment in Meghalaya, India.
  • Harimau Shakti serves as a platform for both armies to exchange best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for conducting joint operations. It not only enhances operational efficiency but also fosters greater camaraderie and mutual respect between the two armies.

Mukti Joddhas, Bangladesh Army Officers to Attend Vijay Diwas celebrations

  • A nine-member delegation comprising Mukti Joddhas and serving officers of the Bangladeshi armed forces arrived here on Sunday evening to attend the Vijay Diwas celebrations, a defence official said.
  • The Vijay Diwas celebrations on Monday will be attended by West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said.
  • Six other family members of the delegates are also accompanying them for attending the Vijay Diwas celebrations in Kolkata on December 16, which marks Indian Armed Forces’ historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, he said.

13TH Edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta Concludes

  • The 13th edition of ‘Admiral’s Cup’ Sailing Regatta concluded on Friday, 13 Dec 24 with a scintillating closing ceremony at Ettikulam Beach at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala. Team Russia represented by Lt Gorkunov Petr llyich and Cdt Loshichinina Polina Vladislavovna won the Admiral’s Cup 24.
  • The event has gained substantial popularity since its inception in 2010. The 13th edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta 2024, saw participation from 25 countries and Indian teams from INA, Ezhimala and NDA, Khadakwasla.

Netanyahu government approves plan to expand settlements on Israeli-occupied Golan

  • Israel’s government approved a plan on Sunday to expand Israeli settlements on the Golan Heights it occupies, saying it had acted “in light of the war and the new front facing Syria” and out of a desire to double the Israeli population on the Golan.
  • “Strengthening the Golan is strengthening the State of Israel, and it is especially important at this time. We will continue to hold onto it, cause it to blossom, and settle in it,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in the statement.
  • Netanyahu’s announcement comes a day after Syria’s new de-facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa criticised Israel for its ongoing strikes on military targets in the country, which have reportedly targeted military facilities.
  • The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented more than 450 Israeli air strikes in Syria since 8 December, including 75 since Saturday evening.
