At Least 20 More CAPF Companies Rushed to Manipur

- Meanwhile, life in Manipur, especially in the Valley districts, came to a halt on Wednesday as a 24-hour shutdown, imposed by a coalition of 13 civil society organisations (CSOs), brought the state to a standstill. Markets, schools, colleges and offices were closed.
- The shutdown, which began on Tuesday afternoon till 6 pm on Wednesday, was called to protest the state government’s alleged inability to address recent violence that have escalated tensions and uprooted communities across the region.
Romeos Done, Navy To Install Indigenous Software
- The Navy has decided to install the indigenously-developed software defined radio (SDR) in all its aerial assets.
- Its MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, also known as Romeos, have become the first naval aerial platform to be fitted with the indigenous system that allows encrypted communication.
- The SDR, which has been developed by the Navy along with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), is already fitted in its surface ships. The aerial platform doesn’t differ much from its surface counterpart in terms of functioning; it’s just much smaller, almost a miniaturised version.
- Back in February 2020, India had signed an agreement with the US to procure 24 MH-60Rs under the framework of foreign military sales (FMS). Nine have been delivered so far and the first squadron of these multi-role choppers, the INAS 334, was commissioned this March at INS Garuda in Kochi.
Centre Imposes AFSPA in Certain Parts of Manipur
- Ministry of Home Affairs extended Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in six Police Stations of five districts of Manipur with immediate effect up till March 31, 2025 to address well-coordinated operation by the security forces in the ethnic violent-hit state to maintain security situation.
- The imposition of AFSPA will be imposed in the areas under jurisdiction of Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong and Moirang Police Stations of five districts in Manipur (Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur).
- This decision follows a comprehensive review of Manipur’s security situation conducted in consultation with key stakeholders. Officials noted that the state continues to experience heightened tensions due to ongoing ethnic violence, including intermittent gunfire in fringe areas, especially between Bishnupur and Churachandpur, as well as Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Jiribam.
