DAC Gives Nod To Nine Proposals Worth Rs 45,000 cr  

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh-led Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given its nod to proposals worth Rs 45,000 crore for the procurement of various weapons systems and platforms including Dhruvastra short range air-to-surface missile and 12 Su-30 MKI fighter jets, the Defence Ministry said.
  • A total of nine procurement proposals were approved by the DAC and all procurements will be made from indigenous vendors only under Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured category which will give substantial boost to the Indian defence Industry towards achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the release said.
  • The DAC also approved the procurement of next generation survey vessels for the Indian Navy, which will greatly enhance its capabilities in performing hydrographic operations.

BEL Receives Orders Worth Rs 3,000 Crore From Cochin Shipyard Ltd                                           

  • Bharat Electronics Limited announced that it has received an order of Rs 2,118.57 crore from Cochin Shipyard Limited for supply of various equipment for Indian Navy.
  • The order consists of Sensors, Weapon equipment, Fire Control systems and Communication equipment for six numbers of Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV), class of anti-surface warfare corvettes.
  • The Bengaluru-headquartered defence major recently also received additional orders worth Rs 886 crore and the said orders pertained to upgrade of AFNET SATCOM N/W, upgrade of Akash Missiles with RF Seeker, Inertial Navigation System and other equipments with accessories and spares etc.
  • With this BEL has in all received orders worth Rs 14,384 Crore till now in the financial year 2023-24.

DDP Institutionalizes Swachhta In Its Offices Across The Country                  

  • Institutionalizing Swachhta in its offices across the country, the Department of Defence Production (DDP) has continued the cleanliness drive even after the conclusion of the Special Campaign 2.0 in October 2022.
  • The activities performed in the Campaign were continued in the secretariat and attached/ subordinate offices of the DDP from November 2022 to August 2023.
  • During the period, the Department had organised cleanliness drives in 624 sites across the country and disposed of 1734 pending public grievances, 451 public prievance Appeals. 4581 physical files were reviewed and 3996 physical files were closed as these had completed retention period.  
  • A sum of Rs. 46,43,637 had been realised in revenue so far from the sale of scrap and 5517 square feet space had been released.

Egypt: INS Sumedha participates with several navies in Exercise Bright Star-23   

  • The Indian Navy Ship (INS) Sumedha participated in Exercise Bright Star-23 with multiple other navies which began on September 3, till September 15.
  • INS Sumedha exercised with navies of Egypt, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Qatar.
  • It further noted that the exercise allowed the exchange of best practices and collaborative training and infrastructure rounds to ensure maritime security.
  • The INS Sumedha arrived at Port Alexandria, Egypt on September 6 to participate in ‘Exercise Bright Star- 23’. This edition of the multinational Tri-Services military exercise will see participation from 34 countries.

Chinese defence minister Li Shangfu under investigation for corrupt procurement

  • Defence Minister Li Shangfu, who has been missing from public view for more than two weeks, has been placed under investigation by Chinese authorities, according to 10 people familiar with the matter.
  • The investigation into Li relates to procurement of military equipment, according to a regional security official and three people in direct contact with the Chinese military. Reuters was unable to obtain details on which equipment purchases were under scrutiny.
  • Eight senior officials from the Chinese military’s procurement unit, which Li led from 2017 to 2022, are also under investigation, according to two of the people in direct contact with the military.
  • The probe into Li, who was appointed as defence minister in March, and the eight officials is being carried out by the military’s powerful disciplinary inspection commission, those two people said.
