A poem on ‘National War Memorial’ and a CHAPTER ON ‘VEER ABDUL HAMEED’ INCLUDED in NCERT Curriculum

  • Developed in alignment with the vision of the NEP 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, a poem titled ‘National War Memorial‘ and chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hameed – have been included in the NCERT curriculum of Class VI from this year.
  • The objective of this initiative, jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Education, is to inculcate the values of patriotism, devotion to duty and courage & sacrifice among the school children and participation of youth in Nation building.
  • The chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hameed’ honours the Braveheart CQMH Abdul Hameed who made supreme sacrifice fighting for the Country during the India-Pakistan war of 1965 and was awarded the Country’s highest gallantry award Param Veer Chakra (posthumously).
  • PM Shri Narendra Modi had dedicated the National War Memorial to the Nation on 25 Feb 2019 in the iconic Central Vista ‘C’ Hexagon, India Gate, New Delhi.

ICG Inks MoU With Key Environmental Foundations

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) signed a MoU with ‘The Habitats Trust’ and ‘HCL Foundation’ to strengthen efforts in marine conservation on September 19, 2024, at ICG Headquarters, New Delhi.
  • The strategic partnership aims to implement critical conservation initiatives and as part of the collaboration, the key efforts will include:
  • Ghost Net Removal: Addressing the problem of discarded fishing nets, which significantly harm marine ecosystems.
  • Mapping and Classifying Ghost Gear Aggregation Areas: Enhancing knowledge about regions most affected by ghost gear to prioritize clean-up efforts effectively.
  • Surveys in Ecologically Sensitive Regions: Monitoring and protecting biodiversity, focusing on vulnerable marine habitats.
  • Community Involvement: Engaging coastal communities in conservation activities to promote stewardship of marine ecosystems.

US Firm Expected To Replace Crashed MQ-9B

  • US firm General Atomics is expected to replace the MQ-9B Predator drone at the earliest to carry out surveillance missions for the Indian Navy as per the requirements projected in the contract between the two sides.
  • As per the lease agreement between the Indian Navy and the US firm, they are supposed to fly a certain number of hours every month to meet naval requirements and that can’t be done by one bird only. They will have to replace the crashed bird to meet the contractual obligations, defence officials told ANI.
  • The Indian Navy had signed a lease contract with the American firm under the Contractor Owned Contractor Operated (COCO) model right after the Galwan clash in 2020. American drone pilots fly the drones for the Indian Navy missions sitting in an Indian Navy base near Chennai.

Qatar Airways Bans Passengers From Carrying Pagers, Walkie- Talkies

  • Qatar Airways has prohibited all passengers flying from Beirut Rafic Harirl International Airport (BEY) from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies on board flights.
  • The airlines said that the restriction applies to checked and carry-on luggage, as well as cargo, and will be enforced until further notice.
  • The latest attack came just a day after 12 people were killed and more than 2800 others were wounded in a coordinated explosion of pagers in Lebanon.

FATF Report Points To ‘Threats To India From IS

  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) mutual evaluation report on India said that the “most significant” terrorism threats in the country appear to relate to Islamic State or Al-Qaeda-linked groups active in and around Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Referring to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), it said the “backlog of pending cases (money laundering) remains considerable, with a large number of accused persons awaiting conclusion of their trials”.FATF is the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog set up in 1989 out of a G-7 meeting of developed nations in Paris.
  • The FATF Plenary is the decision making body of the FATF.It meets three times per year.As of today, it is a 39-member body representing most major financial centres in all parts of the globe.Out of 39 members, there are two regional organisations: the European Commission, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Indonesia is the only observer country of FATF.
  • The FATF Secretariat is located at the OECD headquarters in Paris.

Ahead of Lankan Polls, President Tells About China’s Growing Presence

  • The south Asian and Indian Ocean region is going through a “difficult time”, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said in an exclusive interview. Sri Lanka will hold elections on September 21 to elect the next President.
  • Mr Wickremesinghe, who took over as President when Sri Lanka was going through its worst-ever economic crisis, has steered the economy back towards normalcy. His re-election will prove to be an effective referendum on an unpopular International Monetary Fund austerity plan enacted by his government after the island nation’s unprecedented financial crisis. Ranil Wickremesinghe, 75, is seeking a fresh mandate after claiming credit for stabilising the economy and bringing an end to months of food, fuel and medicine shortages.
  • Describing China as a “leading global power“, Mr Wickremesinghe said that “China is going to have an extended influence in the Indian Ocean region. They are already working with a number of countries.”
