2nd India-Japan Joint Service Staff Talks

  • 2nd India-Japan Joint Service Staff Talks (JSST) between Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) and the Joint Staff of Japan Self Defence Force (JSDF) concluded on November 20, 2024 in New Delhi.
  • In recognition of the evolving dynamics of modern warfare, both countries expressed a shared commitment in fostering collaboration in space & cyber technologies as vital components of their defence partnerships.
  • The JSST is a forum for advancing defence cooperation through regular & high level operational discussions between India and Japan. These meetings serve as a key platform for fostering close, professional collaboration between the armed forces of the two nations.

Push for de-escalation: Rajnath in China Meet

  • Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday held talks with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun at Vientiane in Laos and emphasised the need for the two countries to work towards de-escalation of the conflict in the sensitive Ladakh theatre.
  • In the meeting held on the sidelines of the 11th Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)-Plus, Singh also called for reflecting on the lessons learnt from the unfortunate border clashes of 2020, taking measures to prevent a repeat and safeguarding peace and tranquillity along the India-China border.
  • This was the first meeting of the two defence ministers following the recent disengagement in eastern Ladakh, and the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Brics Summit in Russia.

Ukraine as Russia’s S-400 Blocks Zelensky’s Long-range Missile

  • In a decision likely to escalate the tensions between Ukraine and Russia, U.S. President Joe Biden has reportedly authorized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to carry out attacks within Russia using long-range missiles. Following this approval, Ukraine used the missiles to target a military facility in Russia’s Bryansk region.
  • Russia on Tuesday said that Ukraine had launched an attack with six American-made ATACMS missiles. Five of these were destroyed by Russia’s S-400 air defense system and Pantsir missile system. One missile was damaged, and its debris fell in the region.
  • Meanwhile, Russia has stated that Ukraine’s latest attack against its territory marks a new phase of Western war against Moscow. It has vowed retaliation in response.

India and Guyana ink 10 MoUs

  • India and Guyana signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country, covering areas such as culture”>agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the deployment of UPI in the Caribbean nation.
  • Key agreements include an MoU on Cooperation in the Hydrocarbons Sector, focusing on joint efforts in crude sourcing, natural gas collaboration, and infrastructure development. This partnership also aims to enhance capacity building and expertise sharing across the hydrocarbon value chain.
  • Broadcasting cooperation was also highlighted, with an agreement between Prasar Bharati and Guyana’s National Communications Network to exchange programmes in culture, education, science, and sports. Additionally, a defence-focused MoU between Guyana’s National Defence Institute and India’s Rashtriya Raksha University seeks to enhance education, research, and training in national security and defence studies.

Army Chief in Nepal for 5-day visit

  • Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Wednesday embarked on his five-day visit to Nepal with a focus on bolstering defence partnership and exploring new areas of collaboration between the two countries.
  • Indian Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi arrived here on Wednesday on an official visit to Nepal during which he will be conferred the honorary rank of “General of the Nepal Army” in continuation of an age-old tradition that first started in 1950, reflecting the strong ties between the two militaries.
  • Nepal shares a border of over 1,850 km with five Indian states – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  • The Army chief will also meet the President of Nepal to discuss defence cooperation and attend a banquet hosted in his honour by General Sigdel.
  • On November 22, General Dwivedi is scheduled to address officers of the Nepali Army Command and Staff Course at Shivapuri. He will also meet with Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Defence Minister Manbir Rai to discuss mutual interests and regional security matters.
  • On November 23, the Army chief will attend an ex-servicemen rally in Pokhara, where he will interact with Indian Army veterans residing in Nepal and felicitate ‘Veer Naris’ and gallantry awardees. He will also visit the Nepali Army’s Western Division Headquarters and receive a briefing on operational matters.
  • General Dwivedi will conclude his visit on November 24 and return to India.
