INS Vikrant Joins Western Naval Fleet

  • The country’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant joined the western naval fleet, in a significant enhancement to maritime power in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy said.
  • With this, the Indian Navy has two aircraft carriers – INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya – on its western front.
  • INS Vikrant is an aircraft carrier in service with Indian Navy. The carrier is India’s fourth carrier and the first to be built in India. It was constructed by the Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Kerala. The namesake Vikrant is a tribute to India’s first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

Open Water Swimming Expedition

  • Rajnath Singh, on September 20, 2024, flagged-in, in New Delhi, a first-of-its-kind Open Water Swimming Expedition to the 21 Islands of the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago named after the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) Awardees.
  • PM Narendra Modi had named 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman & Nicobar after the PVC awardees on January 23, 2023, on Parakram Diwas commemorating the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
  • The expedition was formally flagged-off by CINCAN on the occasion of World Water Day on March 22, 2024 from Shri Vijayapuram, with an inaugural swim to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Dweep.

3 BSF Personnel Dead, 9 Injured

  • At least three BSF troopers were killed, while nine others injured when a bus carrying the forces’ personnel for election duty met with an accident in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday, officials said.
  • A hired bus carrying BSF jawans for election duty for the second phase of assembly polls fell into a gorge near Brel of Watarhaal in Budgam district of central Kashmir, the officials said.
  • Around a dozen jawans were injured in the accident, who were rushed to a hospital, they said.
  • However, three troopers have succumbed to the injuries, while others are being treated upon, they added.

900 Kuki Militants Entered Manipur From Myanmar

  • A major security alert has been sounded by the authorities in Manipur in the wake of an intelligence input that over 900 Kuki militants have infiltrated into the state from Myanmar, officials said.
  • As per the intel alert, these are militants who are trained for the use of drone-based bombs, projectiles, missiles and jungle warfare.A report accessed by India today says, “They are reportedly grouped in units of 30 members each and currently scattered in the periphery and expected to launch multiple coordinated attacks on Meitei villages around 28 September 2024”.
  • The latest security concern comes a day after the Indian Army, in a joint operation with the Manipur Police, recovered a large cache of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the hilly regions of Imphal East district.

First-Ever Future Warfare Course To Begin On Sep 23: CDS

  • Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has said a first-ever future warfare course, which will be attended by the officers of different ranks, is slated to start on September 23.
  • In an interaction session at the Bharat Shakti Defence Conclave here on Thursday, he also spoke of the broader contours of the planned joint theatre commands envisioned by the government.
  • “We also discussed how warfare is evolving and what we need to do about it, and that I think is a important. In that we discussed something like a future warfare course, which is going to start after four days, on 23rd (September), the first-ever course, which we are curating it,” the Chief of Defence Staff said.

Israel Carries Out Targeted Strike In Beirut

  • Israel hit a Beirut suburb with an airstrike Friday, not long after Hezbollah pounded northern Israel with 140 rockets following a vow by the militant group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah to retaliate against Israel for a mass bombing attack, the Israeli military and the militant group said. The Israeli military said it had carried out a “targeted strike” in Beirut. It offered no further immediate details, but explosions could be heard coming from the city’s southern suburbs.
  • A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media, confirmed to The Associated Press that an airstrike struck the area, without giving further details.The strike came after Hezbollah pounded Israel with 140 rockets, which the Israeli military said came in three waves targeting sites along the ravaged border with Lebanon.
  • Following the attacks, the Israeli military said that it had struck areas across southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, but didn’t provide details of damage.
