Defence Current Affairs 22 October 2024
Joint Military Training Between IAF & Republic Of Singapore Air Force
- On 21st October 2024, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Republic of Singapore Air Force commenced the 12th edition of the Joint Military Training (JMT) exercise at Air Force Station Kalaikunda, West Bengal.
- The bilateral phase of the exercise will be conducted from 13 to 21 November 2024 and is expected to generate intense collaboration between the two forces, as they engage in advanced air combat simulations, joint mission planning and debriefing sessions.
- The RSAF is participating with its largest contingent till date, comprising of aircrew and support personnel from F-16, F-15 squadrons along with G-550 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) and C-130 aircraft.
- JMT-2024 highlights the strong bilateral defence relationship built over years of collaboration and joint exercises, as well as the mutual respect between India and Singapore.
6th India-Singapore Defence Ministers’ Dialogue
- Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Minister of Defence, Singapore Dr Ng Eng Hen will co-chair the sixth India-Singapore Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in New Delhi on October 22, 2024.
- The meeting aims to carry forward defence cooperation between the two countries. Both sides will also exchange views on regional and global issues of shared interest.
- Singapore is a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy, and an important partner of the Indo-Pacific vision. Defence and security partnership between the two countries is an important factor of stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
- The Singaporean Defence Minister will be on a visit to India from October 21-23, 2024. The 5th edition of the Defence Ministers’ Dialogue took place in January 2021 through virtual teleconference.
CONS On An Official Visit To United Arab Emirates
- Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) is visiting UAE from 21 – 24 October 2024.
- This visit aims to strengthen the defence cooperation between the two countries, in line with the deepening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across all sectors, and consolidate bilateral maritime relations between India and UAE, and to explore new avenues of cooperation between the two navies.
- The CNS is scheduled to hold discussions with Rear Admiral Pilot Saeed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Commander of the UAE Naval Forces and other senior Government officials of UAE.
- He is also scheduled to visit the National Defence College of UAE, where he will interact with the Student Officers. During the visit, the CNS will also witness the conduct of 3rd Edition of India-UAE Bilateral Naval Exercise.
- The cooperative engagements between the Indian Navy and the UAE Navy include Operational interactions through Port Calls, Bilateral Naval Exercise & reciprocal visits, Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks, as well as Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC).
China Agrees To India’s Patrolling Rights In Depsang
- The agreement with China on patrolling rights is set to restore Indian access to several border points in eastern Ladakh that have been cut off since 2020, including the vital Depsang plateau that was blocked by forward deployed Chinese troops and has been the main point of concern.
- Details of the patrolling agreement are yet to be shared but disengagement of troops at both Depsang, where Chinese soldiers had blocked access to patrolling points by occupying the ‘Y Junction‘, and Demchock, where tents had been erected Indian side of LAC, was vital to move to the next step of de-escalation.Sources said the two sides have agreed that patrolling in these two areas — the Depsang Plains in the north of Ladakh and Demchok in the south — will be carried out up to the old patrolling points along the LAC.
- This means that Indian troops can patrol up to patrolling point (PP) 10 to 13 in the Depsang Plains, and in Charding Nullah of Demchok.Sources said certain mutual agreements have also been made for the eastern theatre, especially in the sensitive sectors of Arunachal Pradesh. Other sectors in the east will come up in discussions later between the two sides.While there was agreement on patrolling rights in Depsang Plains and Demchok, sources said the situation at the other friction points — in Galwan Valley and Pangong Tso — where disengagement of troops was achieved two years ago with creation of buffer zones would remain the same.While the normal strength of a patrol is about 13 to 18, at least 14-15 troops will be there in a patrol to avert any clash, sources said. Patrol programmes of both sides will be exchanged and in case of any clashing date or time, it will be mutually modified, sources said.
- Patrolling, the sources said, will be well-coordinated between the two sides and they will keep each other informed.

- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday called out Canada’s hypocrisy, saying the licence that the Western nation gives its diplomats and the way it treats diplomats of other countries on its soil is totally different.
- Jaishankar spoke about the ongoing row with Canada after Ottawa demanded India to remove the diplomatic cover of its High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, who was named a ‘person of interest’ in the murder probe of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada’s move escalated the row, resulting in both sides expelling diplomats.
- Jaishankar also accused Canada of hiding behind “freedom of speech” when anti-India elements threaten Indian leaders and diplomats on its soil.
- Outgoing Indian envoy Sanjay Kumar Verma, in an interview with a private broadcaster in Canada, also highlighted Western hypocrisy when it comes to foreign diplomatic missions.

- The Cabinet Secretary, Dr. T. V. Somanathan chaired a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to review preparedness for the impending cyclone in Bay of Bengal.
