Defence Current Affairs 23 January 2026

India’s defence and foreign policy landscape is witnessing significant transformations, reflecting both social progress and strategic preparedness. From enhanced women participation in the armed forces to cutting-edge technological integration and critical global diplomacy, recent developments underline India’s evolving role in national and international security.

Historic First for Women Agniveer in Republic Day Parade

In a landmark moment for gender inclusion in the armed forces, nine women Agniveer will march as part of the Indian Air Force (IAF) band during the 77th Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path. This marks the first time women Agniveer will participate in the IAF band contingent, symbolising the expanding role of women under the Agnipath scheme.

The IAF band, led by Sergeant Charles Antony Daniel, will accompany a 144-member marching contingent commanded by Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar. Additionally, Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar will unfurl the national flag alongside President Droupadi Murmu, highlighting women officers’ increasing ceremonial and operational prominence.

The parade will also feature a two-phase aerial flypast comprising 29 aircraft, including fighters, transport planes and helicopters. A special spearhead formation will commemorate the success of Operation Sindoor, conducted in May last year.

Military Quantum Mission: Preparing for Future Battlefields

To ensure technological superiority in future warfare, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has unveiled the Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework. The document lays out a comprehensive roadmap for integrating quantum technologies across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Aligned with India’s National Quantum Mission, the framework stresses jointness, inter-service integration and civil-military collaboration. It highlights the strategic importance of quantum computing, communication, sensing and cryptography in gaining an edge over adversaries in an increasingly complex and technology-driven battlefield environment.

Black Shark Torpedo Deal Strengthens Naval Capability

India’s underwater combat strength is set to receive a major boost with the procurement of 48 Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedoes from Italian firm Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS). Signed under the Buy Global category, the ₹1,896 crore deal will equip all six Kalvari-class submarines built under Project 75.

The advanced torpedoes feature modern propulsion, precision guidance and high resistance to countermeasures, enhancing India’s deterrence in contested maritime zones. Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2030, with the system designed to be scalable for future platforms such as Project 75I submarines and potential nuclear-powered attack submarines.

HAL’s Strategic MRO Hub in the Northeast

Strengthening self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has laid the foundation stone for a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub at Missamari in Assam. The facility will support Army Aviation and Indian Air Force assets operating in the strategically sensitive Eastern Theatre.

The hub is expected to significantly improve aircraft availability and response time, particularly in challenging terrain along India’s northeastern borders. It also gains importance amid rising security concerns along the Line of Actual Control with China, where rapid aviation support is critical.

India Weighs Role in Gaza Peace Initiative

On the diplomatic front, India is carefully evaluating an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to join a proposed U.S.-led “Board of Peace” for Gaza. Several countries from West Asia and beyond, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye and Israel, have already agreed to participate.

New Delhi is consulting regional partners and factoring in its long-standing support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. With the League of Arab States’ foreign ministers scheduled to meet in India later this month, the decision will reflect India’s balanced approach, humanitarian commitment and strategic autonomy in West Asian affairs.

Conclusion

Together, these developments highlight India’s multidimensional progress—embracing inclusivity within the armed forces, investing in next-generation military technologies, strengthening defence infrastructure, and exercising caution and responsibility in global diplomacy. They collectively reinforce India’s vision of becoming a resilient, self-reliant and influential global power.
