Yudh Abhyas 2023  

  • The Indian Army will be participating in the 19th edition of a joint military exercise with the United States for Yudh Abhyas 2023 in Alaska.
  • “Indian Army contingent will be participating in 19th Edition of joint military Exercise Yudh Abhyas at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, USA. The Exercise will entail exchanging best practices and enhancing interoperability to mutually learn from each other & strengthen the bond between the two Armies”.
  • The joint exercise will take place from September 25 to October 8 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, US.
  • A total of 350 Indian soldiers will participate in the exercise under the leadership of a Brigadier.

MAIDEN INDIA-INDONESIA-AUSTRALIA TRILATERAL MARITIME EXERCISE                               

  • Indian Navy’s indigenously built warship INS Sahyadri, mission deployed in Indo-Pacific, participated in the maiden trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise with the ships and aircraft from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Indonesian Navy from 20 – 21 Sep 2023.
  • The trilateral exercise provided an opportunity for the three maritime nations to strengthen their partnership and improve their collective capability to support a stable, peaceful and secure Indo-Pacific region. The exercise also provided the opportunity for the participating navies to benefit from each other’s experience and expertise. Complex tactical and manoeuvring exercises, cross-deck visits and cross-deck landings of integral helicopters were conducted for training of crew and enhancement of interoperability.
  • INS Sahyadri, the third ship of the indigenously designed and built Project-17 class multirole stealth frigates was built at Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai and is commanded by Capt Rajan Kapoor.

Courts Cannot Run The Affairs Of The Army: Supreme Court 

  • Courts cannot run the affairs of the Army, the Supreme Court observed on Friday while hearing a petition filed by a woman colonel who was given the charge of a company of soldiers which is ordinarily commanded by a major, two ranks her junior.
  • A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud was hearing three matters- two pertaining to the women officers of the Army and one of the Navy- in which several grievances have been raised including about promotions.
  • “We now can’t run the affairs of the Army,” the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, told senior advocate Meenakshi Arora, appearing for the petitioners, when she raised the issue of the woman colonel having been given the charge of a company which is ordinarily led by a major rank officer.

Russia Plans 26% Rise In Budget Spending In 2024 

  • Russia plans to increase budget spending by 25.8% to 36.6 trillion rubles ($383 billion) in 2024, PM Mikhail Mishustin said, with hefty increases in military and social spending expected ahead of a March presidential election.
  • Russia’s economy has proved more resilient to Western sanctions that most Russian and Western observers first thought, but is now grappling with persistent inflation – which, at an annual 5.45%, is above the central bank’s 4% target – and double-digit interest rates.
  • inance Minister Anton Siluanov said Russia would return to following its budget rule in 2024, envisaging an oil price of $60 per barrel.
  • Under its budget rule, Russia sells foreign currency from its National Wealth Fund (NWF) to make up for any shortfall in revenue from oil and gas exports, or makes purchases in the event of a surplus.
  • The government was discussing budget plans for the next three years. Bloomberg News reported that Russia is also planning a huge hike in defence spending next year, swelling to 6% of GDP from 3.9% in 2023 and 2.7% in 2021.

Banmali Agrawala New Chairman Of Tata Advanced Systems

  • Tata Sons, the holding company of the salt-to-aviation Tata Group, has appointed Banmali Agrawala as the new chairman of Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), the group’s aerospace and defence solutions unit, according to people aware of the development. Agrawala succeeds Vijay Singh who has retired.
  • Agrawala is also a senior advisor at Tata Sons and chairman of Tata Electronics. Singh is the vice-chairman of Tata Trusts.
  • Tata Advanced Systems Limited is an Indian aerospace manufacturing, military engineering and defense technology company. It is a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, a holding company for the Tata Group.
