Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024
- The second edition of the Indian Army’s flagship international seminar, the Chanakya Defence Dialogue, culminated on 25th October at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi.
- This two-day event brought together policymakers, strategic thinkers, academia, defence personnel, veterans, scientists, and subject matter experts from India and abroad to examine India’s strategic directions and developmental priorities.
- The Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024, themed “Drivers in Nation Building: Fueling Growth Through Comprehensive Security,” sparked essential discussions on the integration of security dynamics within the broader context of national and international policymaking.
DRDO Directors’ Conclave 2024
- The two-day DRDO Directors’ Conclave 2024 commenced at Armament Research & Development Establishment, Pune on October 25, 2024.
- This annual event of DRDO was inaugurated by Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat. In his address, the DRDO Chairman stressed upon the criticality of technology leadership in today’s evolving global scenario.
- Various sessions in line with the theme ‘Transforming DRDO for Redefined Defence R&D‘ are being held during the conclave.
US Approves Potential $2 Billion Arms Sale To Taiwan
- The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $2 billion sale to Taiwan of missiles and radar systems, the Pentagon said, a week after China staged war games near the island and including systems that have been battle tested in Ukraine.
- The United States is bound by law to provide Chinese-claimed Taiwan with the means to defend itself despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, to the constant anger of Beijing.
- China has been stepping up military pressure against Taiwan, including holding a new round of war games around the island last week, the second time it has done so since Lai Ching-te took office as Taiwan’s president in May.
- The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the new sale consisted of $1.16 billion in missile systems and radar systems worth an estimated $828 million. The principal contractor for the missile system will be RTX Corp, the Pentagon said.
Strong Explosions Heard In Iran’s Capital
- A number of strong explosions were heard in the Iranian capital Tehran in the early hours of Saturday, state-run IRIB TV reported. The situation at Imam Khomeini International Airport and Mehrabad International Airport is normal.
- The TV quoted security sources as saying that some of the explosions pertained to the activities of the air defense systems deployed near the capital. The sources added that investigations have been launched to identify the source of the explosions, according to the report.
- Israel confirmed that it had launched “precise strikes on military targets in Iran” early Saturday morning local time. The Israel Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to “months of continuous attacks” from Iran.

- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to deepen defence ties with New Delhi and bring the two countries’ militaries closer, he said on Friday, after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- Germany has not traditionally had close defence ties with India but is now pitching to join the latter’s effort to wean its arms base from decades of dependence on Russia, at a time when the West seeks to counter China’s growing influence.
- German Thyssenkrupp (TKAG.DE), opens new tab is one of two bidders to have partnered with Indian firms to build six conventional submarines in India, in a deal estimated to be worth $5 billion.
- The Indian Navy is expected to pick between the German company or Spain’s Navantia soon.
Launch of ‘Abhay’
- ‘Abhay ’, the seventh Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW SWC) being built by M/s GRSE for Indian Navy, was launched on 25 Oct 24 at M/s L&T, Kattupalli.
- The contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was signed between MoD and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata in Apr 19.
- Arnala class of ships will replace the in-service Abhay class ASW Corvettes of Indian Navy and are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and Mine Laying Operations.
- The ASW SWC ships are approx 77 m long, with a maximum speed of 25 knots & endurance of 1800 NM.
