Rahul Gandhi In Parliament’s Defence Committee, Kangana Ranaut Makes Debut

  • Congress MP Rahul Gandhi retains his membership of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence, while actor-politician and the BJP’s first-time parliamentarian Kangana Ranaut has been assigned to the committee on Information Technology, or IT, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said in a notification.
  • Mr. Gandhi, who is also Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House, was a member of the Defence Committee in the previous Lok Sabha too. The committee will be chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh.
  • The Congress has been given the chair of four committees, including the one for External Affairs, which will be led by its former Foreign Minister Shashi Tharoor.

Indian Ocean Rim Association Seminar

  • The second edition of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) seminar on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing was conducted at Naval War College, Goa on 25 Sep 24.
  • The seminar reviewed the IUU fishing activities in the IOR its implications in the economic, environmental and security domain, and the legal voids in tackling these activities that could be pursued by the IORA member states.
  • Delegates from 17 IORA countries including Australia, Bangladesh, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Oman, Somalia, South Africa, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Tanzania participated in the issue-based discussions to counter the ever-growing menace of IUU Fishing in IOR.
  • The Indian Ocean Rim Association was established on 7 March 1997. The vision for IORA originated during a visit by late President Nelson Mandela of South Africa to India in 1995

DG of Quality Assurance Celebrates its 68th Raising Day

  • Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) celebrated its 68th Raising Day on September 27, 2024. The Day marks a significant milestone in its journey towards ensuring the quality of defence armaments, stores and equipment.
  • DGQA has been instrumental in setting and enforcing rigorous Quality Standards for the Indian Army equipment.
  • In a major reform towards ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and to achieve Aatmanirbharta in Defence, re-organisation of DGQA is being carried out, with focus on speeding up Quality Assurance processes & trials and to reduce layers of decision-making.

‘If You Strike Us, We Will Strike You’: Israel PM

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep striking Hezbollah and fight “until victory” against Hamas, in an address to world leaders on Friday that defied calls for ceasefires in Lebanon and Gaza.
  • He also shot a warning at Iran and said Israel would retaliate if Tehran carries out a direct attack.Israel said on Friday that any ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon would be swift. “We will try to do it as short as we can,” said the official, without providing a clear timeline or specifying what would be the objectives of a ground campaign.
  • Hezbollah, a part of Iran-led Axis of Resistance, is also being supported by the Houthi militia of Yemen, who earlier attacked Israel with a missile and a drone that was intercepted by the Israeli air defence system.

India Developing Hypersonic Missiles

  • India’s DRDO was in the process of developing hypersonic missiles for the defence forces of the country, who are now looking to induct long-range cruise and ballistic missiles like the 2,000 km range Nirbhay and 400 km range Pralay missiles.
  • DG of Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery, Lt Gen A Kumar, said the force was also looking at long-range rockets and looking to extend the range of the indigenous Pinaka rockets up to 300 kms in coming times.
  • The officer said that the Indian Army has got clearance from the Defence Acquisition Council for getting Pralay ballistic missiles and Nirbhay missiles.
  • Lt Gen. Kumar said to give teeth to our precision capability, “We are procuring Loiter Munitions, Swarm Drones, Runway Independent RPAS and the like. Kumar said that a total of 19 women officers have been commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery till date.

Indian Army Gets New High-altitude Firing Range

  • The Indian Army has set up a new firing range, which is helping it to practice firing of howitzers and other important weapon systems, a top official from the Indian Army said.
  • The Lieutenant General rank officer, who is the Director General of Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery, said the force is also getting another range along the Northern borders with China.
  • The new firing ranges for the forces have come in Arunachal Pradesh at a time when the Chinese aggression led to a situation where the two countries have been a military standoff since May-June 2020.
  • He said that a number of 155 mm calibre guns/howitzers have been inducted in the Regiment of Artillery to include Ultra-Light Howitzer (ULH), K-9 Vajra, Dhanush & Sharang. ULH have been inducted along Northern borders.
  • The Lt Gen said that the trials for both the mounted gun systems and towed gun systems are likely to commence in 2025.

China’s New Nuclear Submarine Sinks

  • A senior U.S. defense official has confirmed that one of China’s latest nuclear-powered attack submarines sank earlier this year, marking a potential setback for the country’s military ambitions.
  • The incident, which reportedly occurred between May and June, is being viewed as an embarrassment for Beijing, given its ongoing efforts to enhance naval capabilities.
  • China already boasts the largest navy in the world, with over 370 ships. As part of its military expansion, China has been producing new generations of nuclear-powered submarines.
  • However, the sinking of this first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine alongside a pier has raised questions about the operational integrity of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy.
