Azerbaijan President Says Plane That Crashed Was Shot At From Russia
- The Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed in Kazakhstan this week killing 38 people, was damaged due to a shooting from the ground in Russia, the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Sunday.
- He also accused Moscow of having tried to hide the cause of a deadly jet crash and called for Russia to admit “guilt” in the disaster.Flight J2-8243 crashed on Wednesday near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan, leading to the death of 38 people out of the 67 passengers.Initially, it was assumed that the airplane lost control due to a bird strike or dense fog.
- The White House on Friday stated that it had received initial indications suggesting the airliner may have been downed by Russian air defense systems and added that it had offered assistance in the investigation into the crash. The UK has also asked for an independent probe into the matter.
Israel Used THAAD Air Defence System To Take Down Houthi Missile
- An advanced U.S. military anti-missile system was used in Israel to try to intercept a projectile for the first time since President Joe Biden placed the system in Israel in October, a source familiar with the matter has stated.
- The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system was used to try to intercept a projectile from Yemen sometime last week, and an analysis would determine its success, said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
- Israel struck multiple targets linked to the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen on Thursday, including Sanaa International Airport, and Houthi media said at least six people were killed.

Afghan Taliban hit ‘multiple posts’ in Pakistan in response to airstrikes
- Afghan Taliban forces targeted multiple posts inside Pakistan near the border in retaliation for last week’s deadly airstrikes, the Afghanistan Defence Ministry said. However, details about casualties or the nature of the strikes remain unclear.
- The Afghan officials also did not explicitly mention the locations of the strike but said it occurred “beyond the ‘hypothetical line'”, a term Afghan authorities use to describe the disputed border with Pakistan.
- On December 24, Pakistan launched a series of airstrikes targeting the training facilities of insurgents in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. Taliban officials claimed the attack killed at least 46 people, mostly women and children, and vowed to retaliate.
- Afghanistan has long contested the Durand Line, a border demarcated by the British in the 19th century, cutting through the rugged and often ungoverned tribal regions that now separate Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistani officials have accused the Taliban of not doing enough to combat cross-border militant activity, a charge the Taliban government denies.
- The Durand Line also known as the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, is a 2,640-kilometre (1,640 mi) international border between Afghanistan and Pakistan in South Asia. The western end runs to the border with Iran and the eastern end to the border with China.
