MoD inks Rs 2867 Crore Contract

  • Ministry of Defence has signed two contracts, worth approx. Rs 2,867 crore, for the construction of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Plug for DRDO-AIP system & its integration onboard Indian Submarines, and the integration of Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo onboard the Kalvari-Class submarines.
  • The contract for construction of AIP Plug and its integration was inked with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai worth around Rs 1,990 crore, while the contract for integration of EHWT, being developed by DRDO, was signed with Naval Group, France at an approx. cost of Rs 877 crore.
  • The AIP technology is being indigenously developed by DRDO. The project pertaining to construction of AIP-Plug and its integration will enhance the endurance of conventional submarines and significantly contribute towards the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

Keel Laying of Third Cadet Training Ship

  • Keel laying ceremony of the third Cadet Training Ship, Yard 18005, was held at M/s L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli, on 30 Dec 24.
  • The contract for indigenous design and construction of three Cadet Training Ships was concluded between MoD and M/s L&T on 07 Mar 23.
  • These ships will be utilized for training officer cadets at sea after their basic training ashore. The training facility will also be extended to cadets from friendly foreign countries.

Quad Marks 20 Years of 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake

  • Commemorating the 20th anniversary of Quad cooperation, India, Australia, Japan, and the United States highlighted the grouping’s origins in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
  • Emphasising Quad’s evolution from a disaster relief collaboration to a strategic partnership, the four nations reaffirmed their shared vision for a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
  • The Quad’s origins date back to our collaboration in response to the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

ISRO’s GSLV Mission In January Will Be 100th Launch

  • ISRO is gearing up to achieve a significant milestone with a Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle mission scheduled in January set to become the 100th launch from the Sriharikota spaceport, a top official said.
  • The 99th launch from Sriharikota was Monday’s PSLV-C60 mission which successfully placed two spacecraft for conducting the Space Docking Experiment in a circular orbit, ISRO Chairman S Somanath said.”So, all of you have seen the majestic lift-off and the launch of the SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) rocket, and for us, this is the 99th launch of any vehicle from Satish Dhawan Space Centre so, that is also a very important number. So, we are going for the 100th launch at the beginning of the next year”, he said.
  • On future launches planned by ISRO, Somanath said, “In 2025, we will have many missions to start with the GSLV launching the (navigation satellite) NVS-02 in the month of January.”

NCC Republic Day Camp-2025

  • The NCC Republic Day (RD) Camp-2025 commenced at the Cariappa Parade Ground, Delhi Cantt, with “Sarva Dharma” Pooja on 30 December 2024.
  • With the participation of 917 girl cadets, this year’s camp will witness the largest number of girl cadets. A total of 2,361 cadets from all 28 States and 08 Union Territories of the Country are taking part in a month long camp.
  • The participation includes 114 cadets from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and 178 cadets from North East Region (NER) presenting microcosm of “Mini India”. In addition, Cadets and Officers from 14 Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs) will be also participating in the camp as a part of Youth Exchange Programme (YEP).

US Announces $2.5 bn Security Assistance Package for Ukraine

  • The United States announced Monday a $2.5 billion security assistance package for Ukraine as Washington races to provide aid to Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
  • Trump’s November election victory has cast doubt on the future of American support for Ukraine, providing a limited window for billions of dollars in already authorized assistance to be disbursed before he is sworn in next month.
  • Monday’s aid includes a $1.25 billion military “drawdown package”, which allows the Pentagon to take weapons from US stocks and send them quickly to the battlefield.
  • An additional $1.22 billion will be funded via the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, under which military equipment is procured from the defense industry or partners.
  • “Today, I am proud to announce nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.
  • The drawdowns from the defense department shelves will involve drones, ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), optically guided missiles, anti-tank weapons systems, air-to-ground munitions and spare parts, according to a separate statement from the US State Department.
