On April 10, 2025, the Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC 07), consisting of 86 officers, including four Directing Staff, 79 Student Officers, and three Foreign Officers from Sri Lanka, embarked on an informative visit to INS Hansa. This visit was strategically organized to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of naval aviation, training infrastructure, and the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy.
Situated near Dabolim in Goa, INS Hansa is recognized as India’s largest naval airbase. During their exploration of the facility, the officers had the opportunity to tour various Air Squadrons and the cutting-edge Shore Based Test Facility (SBTF). The SBTF, meticulously designed as a mock-up of the INS Vikramaditya’s deck, plays a crucial role in training and certifying navy pilots for carrier-based operations, including those involving the Mikoyan MiG-29K fighter jets, as well as for the developmental trials of the naval HAL Tejas aircraft. The visiting officers were also able to observe static displays of frontline air assets, gaining firsthand insight into the Indian Navy’s advanced aviation capabilities.
The visit was not just a tour but aimed at enhancing the participants’ operational awareness and decision-making skills. This initiative aligns with the Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening its strategic readiness through practical exposure. Additionally, the presence of foreign officers from Sri Lanka highlights India’s ongoing efforts to promote defense collaboration and regional cooperation in military training.
INS Hansa is integral to India’s naval aviation strategy, operating a diverse range of aircraft, including Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopters, Ilyushin Il-38 May, TU-142M Bear aircraft, and the MiG-29K fighters. The base also plays a supportive role in exercises conducted by the Indian Air Force and provides essential facilities for the Indian Coast Guard. With a robust workforce of over 2,000 military personnel and approximately 1,000 civilians, INS Hansa is a cornerstone of India’s maritime defense infrastructure, ensuring readiness in securing the nation’s vast maritime interests.
