Elbit Systems is advancing Israel’s defense capabilities with its development of an airborne variant of the Iron Beam laser weapon system, originally conceived as a ground-based solution by Rafael. This innovative adaptation aims to bolster the Israeli Air Force’s arsenal by adding a high-tech layer to aerial defense mechanisms.
The ground-based Iron Beam operates with a robust 100 to 150-kilowatt solid-state laser, mounted on a mobile platform such as a truck. This capability allows it to effectively intercept and neutralize various aerial threats, including drones, rockets, and cruise missiles. What sets the Iron Beam apart is its cost-effectiveness, enabling defense forces to engage potential threats at a fraction of the expenditure typically associated with conventional interceptor systems.
