Elite Technical Unit of Indian Army Led by Colonel from Corps of Signals

In a landmark move to bolster its warfare capabilities amidst the rapidly evolving global combat landscape, the Indian Army has inaugurated the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG) in Delhi. This Elite Technical Unit, recently established under the stewardship of a Colonel from the Corps of Signals, symbolizes a significant leap towards modernizing the Army’s communication infrastructure.

Corps of Signals

With an impressive cadre of nearly 280 specialists, STEAG’s mission is to spearhead the exploration and integration of cutting-edge communication technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and quantum computing into defense mechanisms. This initiative stems from an acute awareness of the shifting paradigms in warfare, necessitating a robust and futuristic communication framework.

Operating under the aegis of the Corps of Signals, Directorate, the unit’s establishment is a strategic response to the imperative voiced by Army Chief General Manoj Pande for the force to embrace new technologies. This move aligns with the Indian Army’s strategic vision of transforming into a future-ready force, adept at navigating the complexities of modern combat scenarios.

STEAG is tasked with a broad mandate, encompassing the comprehensive spectrum of communication technologies, both wired and wireless. This involves not only the adaptation of existing technological solutions but also the pioneering of innovative approaches to meet the unique demands of military operations.

The reorganization of the former 21 Signals Group into STEAG, with a renewed focus on evaluating and adapting emerging communication technologies, reflects the Army’s proactive approach to technological advancement. This initiative is a part of the broader ‘On Path to Transformation’ vision, which aims at integrating niche technologies to enhance operational effectiveness.

2024, declared as the ‘Year of Tech Absorption’, marks a pivotal moment in the Indian Army’s journey towards technological empowerment. STEAG’s role in collaborating with private sector entities, industry, and academia is crucial for tailoring technological solutions that are not only avant-garde but also congruent with the operational prerequisites of the Army.

This strategic endeavor underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to reinforcing its communication infrastructure, deemed essential for the success of future military engagements. As the nature of warfare undergoes a profound transformation, initiatives like STEAG are instrumental in ensuring that the Indian Army remains at the forefront of technological innovation, ready to confront the challenges of tomorrow.
