Elwave to Deploy Tetrapulse Sensor for Ukraine’s Underwater Mine Countermeasures

French technology developer Elwave has announced its plan to deploy the Tetrapulse sensor in support of Ukraine’s underwater mine countermeasure operations. This advanced sensor technology, a part of Elwave’s flagship Controlled Electric Detection And Ranging (CEDAR) solution, is engineered to facilitate the detection of both metallic and non-metallic mines, as well as munitions hidden in low visibility conditions or deeper waters.

The introduction of the Tetrapulse sensor is anticipated to enhance continuous anti-mine operations in aquatic environments where conventional systems, such as magnetometers, acoustic devices, and video-based technologies, have proven ineffective. In a statement regarding the deployment, Elwave emphasized that the sensor will be integral in helping Ukraine secure its waterways and harbors, while also playing a pivotal role in the revival of essential economic activities disrupted by warfare.

Elwave CEO Pierre Tuffigo expressed confidence in the selection of the Tetrapulse for this crucial task, highlighting that the initiative underscores the trust demining and unexploded ordnance specialists have in the technology’s operational readiness. Tuffigo noted, “We are honored to be part of this effort and look forward to delivering tangible benefits where they are needed most.”

This development comes on the heels of a strategic partnership with Paris-based defense contractor Exail, aimed at integrating the Tetrapulse technology into Exail’s R7 remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This collaboration is part of Exail’s goal to enhance the R7’s capabilities for tracking materials composed of aluminum, steel, and fiberglass composites.

The R7 ROV is a versatile underwater drone with a five-function arm designed for handling and transporting various submerged objects. It boasts an impressive diving capability of up to 300 meters (approximately 984 feet) and can move at speeds of 3 knots (equating to about 3.4 miles or 5.5 kilometers per hour), while also carrying loads of up to 35 kilograms (around 77 pounds).

Together, the deployment of the Tetrapulse sensor and its integration into the R7 drone signifies a significant advancement in Ukraine’s underwater safety and demining efforts, essential for the country’s marine infrastructure and economic recovery in the face of ongoing conflict.
