Embraer to Deliver Advanced Aeromedical Evacuation System to Royal Netherlands Air Force's C-390 Fleet

Embraer is initiating an agreement to supply an advanced aeromedical evacuation system for the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s C-390 Millennium fleet. The arrangement was formalized through signatures from Vice Admiral Jan Willem Hartman, the Dutch Commander of the Materiel and IT Command, and Embraer CEO Bosco da Costa Junior. It includes one firm order along with seven purchase orders, although specific details regarding the terms and financial aspects were not disclosed.

The innovative system features a roll-on/roll-off medical module designed to be a self-contained, air-transportable unit, capable of delivering full life support and intensive care for patients during transit. Additionally, the module encompasses a dedicated isolation area to handle cases involving infectious diseases, thereby minimizing risks to medical personnel and crew on board.

Designed to integrate seamlessly with the C-390’s cargo handling system, the medical module operates much like traditional wheeled cargo, allowing for efficient loading and unloading processes. This ensures that medical teams have immediate access to the requisite tools for effective patient care.

Vice Admiral Hartman emphasized the transformative potential of this new system. “This system will expand the operational capabilities of our C-390 Millennium fleet, transforming them into a modular airborne medical facility capable of delivering life-saving care both in the air and on the ground. With these new capabilities, we will be able to provide vital assistance when it is needed most,” he stated.

Embarking on the aircraft’s evolution, da Costa expressed pride in supporting the Netherlands’ efforts to bolster their aeromedical response capabilities with this cutting-edge, mission-ready solution.

The C-390 Millennium is noted for its multi-mission capabilities and possesses a significant payload capacity of 26 metric tons (approximately 57,320 pounds). It can reach speeds of up to 470 knots (870 kilometers or 540 miles per hour) and has been designed for operational readiness on varied surfaces, including both paved and unpaved terrains like packed earth, soil, and gravel.

The aircraft has garnered attention internationally, as evidenced by Lithuania’s recent selection of the C-390 as its next military transport aircraft and Portugal’s announcement of plans to acquire its sixth KC-390 Millennium from Embraer. This showcases the growing recognition of the C-390’s versatility and operational efficiency in military transport roles.
