Erdogan Confident of Turkey's Readmission to US F-35 Program Amid Improved Relations with Trump

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has conveyed optimism regarding Turkey’s potential reentry into the U.S. F-35 program, expressing expectations of acquiring the stealth fighter jets following what he describes as a “agreement” with U.S. President Donald Trump. This development comes in the wake of Turkey’s expulsion from the F-35 program in 2019, following its acquisition of the S-400 Russian surface-to-air missile defense system, which led to substantial sanctions imposed on Ankara a year later by the United States.

Erdogan articulated his confidence as he returned from a visit to Azerbaijan, suggesting that Trump would honor their mutual understanding. “I believe that Mr. Trump will remain loyal to the agreement we made. I think the F-35s will be delivered to Turkey step-by-step during his term,” Erdogan stated, according to Anadolu state news agency. While he refrained from providing specific details on the purported agreement, he emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader “geo-economic revolution.”

He further remarked, “The F-35 issue is not only a military technology issue for us, but also a strong partnership issue in international platforms such as NATO.” This statement highlights the intertwined nature of military cooperation and diplomatic relations among NATO allies.

Tensions between Washington and Ankara have intensified due to the sanctions affecting Turkey’s defense sector. However, a new signal of reconciliation emerged recently, with Tom Barrack, the U.S. envoy to Turkey, suggesting that these sanctions could be resolved “by the year’s end.” He indicated that both leaders would direct their top diplomats to work collaboratively towards a solution, adding that Congress is expected to support a constructive resolution.

Earlier this year, Erdogan had discussions with Trump regarding Turkey’s desire to finalize a deal not only for the F-35s but also for the purchase of U.S. F-16 fighter jets. In a positive sign, he suggested last month that an end to the sanctions was within reach, noting that Turkey had experienced some easing of the sanctions under the Trump administration.

As both nations explore options to mend their bilateral relations, the focus remains on navigating the complexities surrounding defense cooperation and broader geopolitical considerations.
