New Delhi: The 14th edition of Exercise INDRA, reflecting the longstanding maritime collaboration between India and Russia, is scheduled to take place off the coast of Chennai from 28 March to 02 April 2025. Since its launch in 2003, Exercise INDRA has evolved into a fundamental component of the strategic partnership between the two nations, significantly enhancing naval interoperability and operational synergy within their respective fleets.
The exercise will unfold in two distinct phases:
Harbour Phase: This segment will occur from 28 to 30 March 2025 in Chennai and will incorporate various professional and cultural exchanges aimed at strengthening the relationships among the participating forces. Key activities planned for this phase include:
- An Opening Ceremony to officially kick off the exercises.
- Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) designed to promote knowledge sharing between the naval personnel.
- Reciprocal Visits and Sports Fixtures to nurture camaraderie among the crews.
- Pre-sail Briefings to ensure effective coordination ahead of the sea operations.
Sea Phase: From 31 March to 02 April 2025, the maritime operations will transition to the Bay of Bengal. This phase will emphasize advanced naval maneuvers and joint operational tactics, including:
- Tactical maneuvers and coordinated fleet operations to bolster collaborative capabilities.
- Live weapon firings and anti-air operations aimed at enhancing combat readiness.
- Underway replenishment exercises to strengthen logistical support.
- Helicopter cross-deck landings and the exchange of sea-riders to improve interoperability between the two navies.
The exercise will bring together frontline assets from both the Indian and Russian navies. The Russian Federation Navy will contribute ships such as the Pechanga, Rezkiy, and Aldar Tsydenzhapov. In turn, the Indian Navy will be represented by INS Rana, INS Kuthar, and the Maritime Patrol Aircraft P-8I.
The overarching aim of Exercise INDRA 2025 is to reinforce bilateral maritime cooperation, elevate operational standards, and facilitate the exchange of best practices in naval operations. The integration of complex drills, live-fire exercises, and cross-deck operations underscores the deepening operational synergy and trust between India and Russia’s naval forces.
