What Is The C-295MW Transporter?

The C-295MW is a 5-10 tonne transport aircraft that will replace aging Avro aircraft purchased by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the 1960s. The Request For Proposal (RFP) was published to worldwide corporations in May 2013, and the Defence Acquisition Council approved the sole bid by Airbus and TASL in May 2015. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the acquisition of 56 C-295MW aircraft and accompanying equipment on September 24, 2021.

Sixteen of the 56 contracted aircraft will arrive in fly-away condition from Spain between September 2023 and August 2025. The remaining 40 will be built in the United States and delivered at a rate of eight aircraft per year between September 2026 and 2031. According to the MoD, over 240 engineers would be educated at the Airbus plant in Spain for the project. The C-295 is extremely fuel efficient and can take off and land from both short and unprepared runways. As fly-away aircraft begin to arrive, the IAF will base its first C-295 squadron at Vadodara by converting the existing Avro squadron.
