GE Aerospace and Merlin Labs Collaborate on AI-Powered Autonomy Platform for Aircraft

In a significant development within the aviation sector, GE Aerospace and Merlin Labs have joined forces to create an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)–powered autonomy platform tailored for both military and civilian aircraft. This system, named “Autonomy Core,” aims to facilitate single-pilot operations, lessen crew workload, and allow for unmanned flight, highlighting the industry’s ongoing evolution toward automation.

The newly developed platform will integrate GE Aerospace’s extensive flight management systems—currently utilized in over 14,000 aircraft globally—with Merlin’s advanced autonomy software, robust avionics packages, and Datalink technology. This collaboration seeks to establish a standardized framework for dependable aircraft systems that can be utilized across both vintage and cutting-edge aircraft.

Matt Burns, general manager of Avionics Systems at GE Aerospace, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation. He stated, “At GE Aerospace, we’re constantly working to find innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of our customers. Working with Merlin, we’re able to unlock new capabilities that will redefine what’s possible for next-generation autonomous flight. This represents an important step forward in aviation autonomy.”

The initial implementation of the Autonomy Core platform is slated for use within the U.S. Air Force’s ongoing initiative to upgrade the cockpit components of the KC-135 Stratotanker, a pivotal aerial refueling aircraft that has been operational since the 1950s. This refresh of the cockpit is designed not only to enhance functionality but also to address supply chain challenges, ensuring that the refueling fleet remains mission-ready.

Merlin Labs has already established agreements with the Air Force Materiel Command to trial autonomous systems aboard the KC-135, marking a preliminary move toward achieving unmanned flight capabilities. Both companies envision that this partnership could eventually broaden its scope to include transport, refueling, and civilian aircraft, thereby providing a flexible and certifiable autonomy system applicable across multiple aviation platforms.

Matt George, CEO of Merlin, underscored the strategic importance of this collaboration, citing, “Our national security relies heavily on our continued air power dominance, and integrated systems that allow for the use of autonomy-focused solutions are essential to that ongoing strength.” He also highlighted GE Aerospace’s history of delivering systems to both commercial and government sectors, suggesting that this partnership would facilitate the rapid introduction of complementary capabilities to the market.

By merging GE Aerospace’s open system architecture with Merlin’s autonomous technology, the companies aim to pioneer the next generation of avionics systems. This collaboration not only extends their existing relationships with clients but also enhances the types and volume of platforms they can support, thereby accelerating revenue growth in the aviation sector.
