General Dynamics NASSCO Transfers Fifth John Lewis-Class Oiler to US Navy

General Dynamics NASSCO has officially handed over the fifth ship in the John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oiler series, the USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209), to the U.S. Navy. This transfer marks a significant accomplishment following extensive sea trials and rigorous component assessments designed to ensure the vessel’s readiness for service.

The USNS Lucy Stone’s delivery is part of the Navy’s broader T-AO program aimed at modernizing the surface fleet. These advanced vessels are designed to transport substantial quantities of fuel for warships, including on-board maritime helicopters and dry goods essential for the sustenance of operating sailors within multiple areas of military responsibility.

The U.S. Navy has plans to incorporate up to 20 tanker vessels into this replenishment network, with six currently in various stages of development and four already deployed for active duty.

John Lighthammer, manager of the auxiliary and special mission shipbuilding program office for the Navy, emphasized the significance of this delivery. “The delivery of USNS Lucy Stone will provide our fleet with another oiler, enhancing our replenishment underway and direct fueling capabilities,” he stated. Lighthammer added that this milestone not only strengthens the Navy’s operational capabilities but also supports civilian mariners with an additional ship equipped for at-sea operations.

The John Lewis-class oiler measures 746 feet (227 meters) in length and features a beam of 107 feet (33 meters). It is outfitted with two dry cargo rigs and five refueling stations, showcasing its ability to carry a total of 162,000 barrels (approximately 25.7 million liters) of oil, as well as accommodating 125 personnel and a support helicopter.

Powered by twin Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines, the vessel reaches a maximum speed of 20 knots (23 miles or 37 kilometers per hour) and boasts a remarkable operational range of over 6,000 nautical miles (6,905 miles or 11,112 kilometers). For its protection, the USNS Lucy Stone is equipped with advanced defensive systems, including torpedo countermeasures, multiple .50-caliber machine guns, automatic weapon systems, and surface-to-air missiles, ensuring its capability to operate safely in a variety of maritime environments.
