In a significant advancement for military technology, General Dynamics Land Systems has unveiled a new modular kit designed to enhance the capabilities of Abrams and Stryker armored vehicles by allowing them to launch AeroVironment loitering munitions. This innovative system is known as the Precision Effects & Reconnaissance, Canister-Housed (PERCH) system, which has been co-developed with AeroVironment.
The PERCH kit stands out for its ease of installation, requiring no welding or cutting. For the Abrams main battle tank, it replaces the loader sponson box and fastens directly to existing attachment points. Future updates for the system are expected to enable it to interface seamlessly with the onboard computer systems of the vehicles.
Compatibility is noted with the M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 and the Stryker infantry carrier vehicle, positioning the PERCH system as a versatile tool for modern military operations. Jim Pasquarette, the vice president for US strategy and business development at General Dynamics Land Systems, emphasized the strategic advantages the PERCH system offers. “This allows units to deploy Switchblade loitering munitions far forward on the battlefield while remaining covered and concealed themselves,” he stated. The system has garnered significant interest from soldiers, reflecting a pressing need for effective technology in combat scenarios.
The capabilities of this new system were showcased during the U.S. Army’s Machine Assisted Rugged Sapper demonstration at Fort Hood, Texas, where a complex obstacle breach was achieved using beyond-line-of-sight reconnaissance and targeting of high-value targets. The demonstration involved the launch of Switchblade 300 and Switchblade 600 munitions from an Abrams tank fitted with the PERCH kit. The Switchblade 300 boasts an estimated operational range of 6 miles (10 kilometers), while the Switchblade 600 can engage targets up to 27 miles (43 kilometers) away.
AeroVironment’s senior vice president for loitering munitions systems, Brian Young, outlined the operational benefits of integrating these munitions into General Dynamics Land Systems platforms. “Integrating Switchblade 300 and 600 into General Dynamics Land Systems platforms through the PERCH modular kit delivers immediate operational advantages – extending reach and enabling rapid, precise effects from protected positions,” he noted.
The recent demonstration highlighted the enhanced precision engagement capabilities afforded by embedding advanced loitering munition systems on combat vehicles. The collaboration between General Dynamics and AeroVironment underscores a shared commitment to providing reliable and field-ready solutions for military personnel on the ground.
