German Armed Forces Contracts Flensburg Technology Systems for Light Airborne Combat Vehicles

The German Armed Forces has taken a significant step in enhancing its capabilities by awarding a framework contract to Flensburg Technology Systems. This contract will facilitate the supply of up to 200 light airborne combat and support vehicles specifically designed for special forces units.

The initial order includes 40 combat vehicles and 14 support variants, amounting to an investment of approximately 30 million euros (around $35 million). This procurement also encompasses special tool kits and comprehensive documentation necessary for the operational deployment of the vehicles. The budget for this procurement has already been allocated, and deliveries are anticipated by the end of 2028. Furthermore, the seven-year framework agreement allows for additional vehicle orders as needs evolve.

Jörg Kamper, CEO of Flensburg Technology Systems, expressed satisfaction regarding the collaboration with the Bundeswehr, emphasizing the partnership’s long-term significance. He highlighted the company’s commitment to working closely with the KSK (German Special Forces Command) and expressed confidence in the vehicle’s suitability for not only the Bundeswehr but also other international special operations forces.

The newly introduced vehicles, collectively referred to as Tahr, fall within a new 3.2-ton class tailored to meet the rigorous demands of special operations. They are based on the well-established Z family of all-terrain vehicles developed by Israel Aerospace Industries/ELTA, renowned for their off-road agility, rapid acceleration, and remarkable stability.

The Tahr combat variant features seating for three and is equipped with a primary mount capable of accommodating various effective armaments, including a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, a minigun, or a grenade launcher. In contrast, the airborne support version focuses on material transport, designed to accommodate two seats without a primary weapon mount.

Flensburg Technology Systems, which operates out of Germany, is a subsidiary of FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft and Israel Aerospace Industries/ELTA, reflecting a strong integration of expertise in military vehicle manufacturing. The introduction of these vehicles is expected to bolster the operational readiness of the German Armed Forces and their special operations command, aligning with modern demands for military responsiveness and effectiveness in varied terrains.
