Germany and Netherlands Secure €4.5 Billion Contract for 270 Boxer Armored Vehicles

Germany and the Netherlands have entered a significant defense collaboration by contracting a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland to procure 270 Boxer armored vehicles. This high-stakes agreement, finalized through the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation, carries a total value of 4.5 billion euros (approximately $5.25 billion).

Under this contract, the German Armed Forces will receive 198 Boxer vehicles, while the Dutch military will secure 72 units. The German order, valued at about 3.4 billion euros (approximately $3.96 billion), encompasses various vehicle types, including 150 infantry fighting vehicles, 10 driver training vehicles, and 38 ambulance variants. Deliveries for this substantial order are anticipated to take place between 2027 and 2031. The Netherlands is set to receive its first Boxer systems by the end of 2028.

Moreover, the agreement includes an option to acquire an additional 248 vehicles, comprising 200 for Germany and 48 for the Netherlands, indicating a long-term commitment to enhancing military capabilities in both nations.

Among the featured vehicles in this contract is the Schakal Infantry Fighting Vehicle, which represents a groundbreaking co-development effort between the two countries. The Schakal variant integrates the Boxer drive module with a state-of-the-art unmanned Rheinmetall RCT30 turret. This turret is equipped with a stabilized 173mm x 30-2/ABM machine gun, capable of firing programmable airburst ammunition. This distinct capability allows the ammunition to detonate at precise points, creating a cloud of sub-munitions designed to engage and defeat small drones in the field.

The Schakal system reportedly excels at targeting micro drones at distances reaching up to 1,500 meters (4,921 feet). Additionally, to bolster its anti-tank capabilities, the turret boasts a launcher on its left side, which is designed to carry two MELLS anti-tank guided missiles, known as Spike LR/Spike LR2.

The Boxer vehicles will be equipped with the most advanced iteration of the Boxer drive module, setting a new standard for all participating states in the Programme for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR). This strategic partnership between Germany and the Netherlands marks a significant step forward in their military modernization efforts and emphasizes collaboration in defense capabilities.
