HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to Bid for Saudi Arabia’s Frigate Program at World Defense Show 2026

South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is set to intensify its pursuit of Saudi Arabia’s next-generation frigate program at the upcoming World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, touted as the largest defense exhibition in the Middle East.

The shipbuilder plans to showcase its 6,000-ton HDF-6000 export frigate, a vessel developed using insights and expertise gained from constructing the Republic of Korea Navy’s Sejong-class and Jeongjo-class destroyers. This next-generation frigate boasts advanced features, including upgraded Aegis combat systems that Hyundai asserts align well with the operational needs of the Royal Saudi Navy.

As part of its bid, Hyundai is offering a comprehensive package that encompasses program management, sustainment, repair, and overall lifecycle support for the frigate, emphasizing a commitment to long-term partnership with the Saudi military.

Central to Hyundai’s strategy is a strong focus on localization, particularly the collaboration with the International Maritime Industries shipyard, which is a joint venture including Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant. This approach not only aims to enhance the capabilities of the Royal Saudi Navy but also intends to foster domestic production and support networks within Saudi Arabia.

In addition to exhibiting its frigate, Hyundai is expected to finalize agreements with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Investment and twelve other Korean firms during the show. This collaboration aims to establish a robust local defense supply chain, enhancing Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities while providing opportunities for Korean companies in the region.

The World Defense Show, scheduled to run through mid-February, is anticipated to attract over 100,000 visitors and feature approximately 770 defense companies from more than 70 countries, offering a significant platform for HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to strengthen its international presence and foster strategic partnerships in the defense sector.
