In a strategic move to enhance operational efficiency, HII has announced its collaboration with C3 AI to optimize processes within its Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions. This partnership aims to integrate advanced digital solutions powered by artificial intelligence, focusing on key operational areas such as planning, supply chain management, labor allocation, and the assembly of unmanned vehicles.
The decision to implement C3 AI’s capabilities comes after a successful six-month deployment in Mississippi, where HII’s workforce employed sophisticated algorithms to improve scheduling and overall production efficiency. The insights gained from this trial are expected to significantly boost ship development timelines and operational outcomes, directly supporting the US Navy’s requirements for “fleet readiness.”
This initiative aligns with HII’s broader strategic goal to increase production throughput by 20 percent in fiscal year 2025. Currently, HII plays a crucial role in the US Navy’s vessel production and sustainment efforts. Its Newport News Shipbuilding division specializes in the construction of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, while the Ingalls Shipbuilding division focuses on amphibious vessels and destroyers.
HII CEO Chris Kastner emphasized the importance of increasing shipbuilding throughput as a top priority for both HII and the US Navy. He expressed pride in the partnership with C3 AI, highlighting the goal of leveraging data and digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, to meet the urgent demands of delivering ships to the Navy. This collaboration represents a significant step towards modernizing and streamlining shipbuilding operations in support of national defense initiatives.
