Meet 8 Women Cadets Who Will Be the 1st to Pass Out from IMA Dehradun

On 13 June 2026, the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun will mark a historic occasion as it welcomes its first batch of women officer cadets during the Spring Term Passing Out Parade. For the first time in the academy’s 94-year history, these eight pioneering women will receive permanent commissions as Lieutenants in the Indian Army, symbolizing a significant leap forward in gender integration within the military.

The journey of these eight cadets began in August 2022 when the National Defence Academy (NDA) opened its doors to female aspirants following a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2021. Among the women who enrolled in the NDA’s 148th Course, 17 successfully completed the rigorous three-year training program by May/June 2025. Of these, eight made the momentous choice to join the Indian Army and started their pre-commission training at the IMA in July 2025. This marked a significant milestone, as it was the first occasion that women cadets joined the IMA through the demanding NDA route.

Since their arrival at the IMA, these eight women have engaged in the same intensive training regimen as their male counterparts. They have faced an unyielding curriculum without any special concessions, enduring the same demanding drills, physical conditioning, weapons training, tactical exercises, leadership development sessions, and academic classes. This commitment showcases that excellence in military training is based on merit, resilience, and determination, rather than gender.

As they prepare for the upcoming Passing Out Parade, they will stand on equal footing with their male peers from the 158th Regular Course and the 141st Technical Graduate Course. The event, taking place at the iconic Chetwode Building Drill Square, will be graced by the presence of the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, who will serve as the Reviewing Officer. During this momentous ceremony, these women will take the Antim Pag, the final step that signifies their transformation from cadets to commissioned officers.

The upcoming commissioning of these officers represents a broader movement toward integrating women into leadership roles within the Indian military. Recent years have seen a significant expansion of permanent commissions for women across various branches of the Armed Forces, driven by judicial measures and policy reforms. While women have served with distinction through other routes, the NDA–IMA path offers a prestigious pathway for those seeking regular commissions right from the start.

The accomplishment of these eight women serves as a powerful inspiration for aspiring female candidates preparing for competitive exams such as the NDA, CDS, or AFCAT. Their journey demonstrates that although the standards are stringent and the training rigorously challenging, success is attainable with hard work, mental fortitude, and unwavering commitment.

As India continues its march toward inclusivity within its military framework, these eight women epitomize progress. Their journey—from NDA aspirants in 2022 to commissioned officers in 2026—will resonate as a transformative chapter in the narrative of Indian military history. With their induction, the Indian Army embraces a more diverse talent pool drawn from the entire spectrum of society, further strengthening the nation’s defenses. These women not only break barriers but also set an inspiring benchmark for future generations, embodying the core values that underpin a successful military career: integrity, perseverance, leadership, and selfless service. As they step into their roles, the nation anticipates their contributions with pride and hope.
