How Scientists Solved Mysterious Signals Detected Globally

Why In News

  • Scientists monitoring global seismic activity detected unusual signals that stretched from the Arctic to the Antarctic, as per the recent reports. These signals were a continuous hum with a single frequency vibration and lasted for nearly nine days, unlike typical earthquake waves.

About The Incident

  • In an unprecedented event, a peculiar seismic phenomenon resonated around the planet for an astonishing nine-day period.
  • Scientists initially thought it was produced by small earthquakes, but the frequency did not match any historical data. This mysterious sound on the same frequency was picked up by seismic instruments around the world in September 2023. Like the ‘Unidentified Flying Objects’ (UFO), this mysterious sound was dubbed an “Unidentified Seismic Object” (USO) by the scientific community.
  • Primary investigator behind a groundbreaking study on the event explained USO as a colloquial term used by seismologists when confronted with such unknown seismic phenomena.

  • Led by Dr Svennevig, about 70 experts from 15 countries embarked on a quest to decode the nature of this seismic hum. Initial investigations ruled out the possibility of an earthquake, leading them down a path of discovery that would lead to a startling revelation.
  • The scientific trail led researchers to a remote fjord in eastern Greenland. There, they discovered the source of the planet-wide humming sound.
  • Scientists found clues of a catastrophic geological event of staggering proportions. A colossal mountain peak, towering 1.2 kilometres above the Dickson fjord, had collapsed.

  • The collapse triggered a huge avalanche, unleashing over 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the almost frozen waters of Greenland. This debris was sufficient to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
  • The researchers say this massive displacement of material set in motion a chain of events that would resonate across the globe.
  • The initial impact generated a monstrous tsunami, with waves reaching an astounding height of 200 meters – equivalent to 60-story skyscrapers. This was one of the largest recorded tsunamis of modern times.

  • It was this sloshing of water, driven by the energy produced by the avalanche, that set off the strange seismic signal, which was detected from the Arctic to Antarctica.
  • The event is once again a stark reminder of how rapidly the delicate balance of our planet is being altered.

  • This unusual phenomenon is only one of the many such extreme events being experienced around the world. The human contribution to climate change is undeniable.
  • Our burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial activities have released vast quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, trapping heat and causing global temperatures to soar.
  • The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has unequivocally stated that human activities are responsible for 100% of the warming observed since 1950.
