Wellington Island near Kochi, Kerala is the home to the Indian Navy Base INS Venduruthy. The Southern Naval Command’s centralized administration is housed there. INS Venduruthy is the largest training facility of the Indian Navy and is closely located near INS Garuda, a naval air station.
INS VENDURUTHY Diving School
On June 23, 1943, the Indian Naval Ship Venduruthy, a base depot ship, was commissioned as Her Majesty’s Indian Ship Venduruthy. The Chatfield Committee Review for India’s Defense Requirements from 1935 is when the unit got its start. It was determined to expand Kochi into a full-fledged naval base and a 9-year plan was put into motion for the building of depot ships, training facilities, and local naval defence equipment there. The start of World War II significantly accelerated the decision’s implementation. A minor naval base was built at Kochi on August 31, 1939. On Willingdon Island, 50 acres of land that stretched from Malabar Gate to Old Cinema Gate had been purchased from the Port Authority by the end of 1940.

Short History
The barracks where sailors were housed at Fort Kochi were known as “Venduruthy II,” as the permanent Naval Base being built. On 23 June 1943, the facility was finally given the HMIS Venduruthy designation. On 15 August 1947, the title was changed to INS Venduruthy. The defining characteristic that distinguishes Venduruthy from all other Establishments is the fact that inside its proverbial “four walls” are located the Southern Naval Command Headquarters, the Naval Ship Repair Yard, jetties for IN and ICG Ships, a Naval Air Station, a Material Organization, a Command Hospital, a host of Training Schools, officers’ and sailors’ in-living and married accommodation, as well as a variety of other facilities and assets.
The Seamanship School provides instruction to executive officers and sailors of the Indian Navy and a number of friendly foreign naval forces. In addition to the naval NCC units, the facility also serves the logistical needs of the services, civilian employees, and naval units stationed in Kochi, Ezhimala, Wellington, Bangalore, and the Lakshadweep Islands.
Additionally, it houses the NIETT, Signal School, Centre for leadership and Behavioral Studies (CLABS), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) School, Navigation & Direction School, and Diving School.
The one and only characteristic that distinguishes Venduruthy from all other Establishments is the fact that inside its proverbial “four walls” are located the Southern Naval Command Headquarters, the Naval Ship Repair Yard, jetties for IN and ICG Ships, a Naval Air Station, a Material Organization, a Command Hospital, a host of Training Schools, officers’ and sailors’ in-living and married accommodation, as well as a wide range of other facilities and assets. Almost all naval units in Kerala and, more specifically, a handful of units at Kochi that are part of the SNC, are supported logistically and administratively by INS Venduruthy. The name “Venduruthy” is derived from the former local name “Vittathuruthy” for Kochi’s Willingdon Island.
Indian Navy Diving School
By setting up a high standard for itself which aims to meet the demands Navy and its sister services the school conducts basic and specialist training in Military Diving for officers and sailors of the Navy, Officers, and men of the Army, Air Force, and Paramilitary forces.
How to Join Diving Course at INS VENDURUTHY Diving School
After getting commissioned, you must maintain a very high level of physical fitness and be an excellent swimmer. When in your parent branch, you can volunteer to join Diving as a permanent diver your area of expertise in diving will be vast, you have to join MARCOS for joining the permanent cadre and only GS X officers are allowed for that, while regular diver you will be routine diving techniques for minor underwater jobs or to carry out search and rescue operations.
