The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its primary mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed conflict. It was established on 8th October 1932. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of all Indian armed forces and by virtue of that fact is the National Commander-in-chief of the Air Force. The Chief of the Air Staff with the rank of Air chief marshal is the Commander.

About Sarang Helicopter Display Team

Sarang is the Indian Air Force’s helicopter air display team, which flies four modified HAL Dhruv helicopters, also known as Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH). The team was founded in October 2003, and its first performance was in 2004 at the Asian Aerospace Show in Singapore. The name Sarang is symbolic; the peacock is India’s national bird. The unit was established in 2005 as the No. 151 Helicopter Unit and was relocated from Yelahanka AFS in Bangalore to Sulur AFS in Coimbatore in 2009.

Sqn Ldr Ajay Pathania led the first displays using the HAL Dhruv aircraft at Aero India 2003 in Bangalore. The Sarang unit was formally organized as a three-helicopter display team later in 2003. At the 2004 Singapore Air Show, the team began performing with four helicopters. The team regularly performs at Aero India, a biennial air show held at Yelahanka Air Force Station near Bangalore, and on Air Force Day, the Indian Air Force’s anniversary, held every 8 October at Hindon Air Force Base.

How one can join the Sarang Display Team?

To become a Sarang Helicopter display team Pilot one has to get commissioned as a Helicopter Pilot in the Indian Air Force. Only the top pilots are selected for the Sarang Display team and there is no direct choice or preference to get into the Sarang Display team.
