IAF Keen to Replace AN-32 with C-295 Transport Aircraft by 2030

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a search for a viable replacement for its ageing AN-32 transport aircraft, as the first members of this fleet will be 44 years old by 2031-32. The AN-32, first introduced in 1986, has faithfully served the IAF for decades, but as time has passed and the Soviet Union has crumbled, the aircraft’s reliability and availability have become progressively hampered.

IAF Keen to Replace AN-32 with C-295 Transport Aircraft

While the AN-32 was recognised for its tough performance and powerful engines, the difficulties in locating spare parts and dealing with obsolescence have taken their toll on its longevity. In response to these concerns, an ‘upgrade’ programme to improve the aircraft’s structural integrity, avionics, and communication systems was proposed in 2009.

However, work has been slow, with only 46 completed, 40 of which were completed in Ukraine and the remainder in India by the IAF’s base repair depot in Kanpur. However, the initiative was halted due to strained relations between Moscow and Kyiv following Russia’s invasion of the Crimean peninsula.

As the AN-32 fleet aged and wear and tear accumulated, the need for an overhaul became clear. As time passes, the acquisition of spare parts becomes more expensive and difficult, causing substantial operational challenges for the IAF. It’s worth noting that the IAF is the world’s lone major operator of the AN-32. The high vibration levels and noise created by the AN-32’s strong engines are one of its noticeable operational characteristics, particularly during long flights. This noise and vibration can cause tiredness in pilots during extended operations, emphasising the significance of addressing these issues in any future replacement aircraft.

The IAF has already published an RFI for MTA aircraft capable of carrying an 18-30-ton payload, to which Lockheed Martin, Embraer, and Airbus have responded. A separate proposal is in the works to purchase additional Airbus C-295S to replace the An-32s, which have a similar load-carrying capacity.
