A mechanised sailing vessel, Virat 1, flagged under India, sank off the coast of Oman on June 14 after experiencing a critical engine failure. The incident, which left the vessel stranded and taking on water, initiated a significant international rescue operation approximately 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd.

Carrying a crew of 14 Indian nationals, the vessel encountered mechanical troubles while at sea, leading to a gradual flooding of the ship until it ultimately sank. The crew, faced with the deteriorating situation, made the decision to abandon the vessel.

In response to distress signals from Virat 1, Omani authorities mobilized a large-scale search and rescue operation, enlisting the help of nearby commercial vessels and the United States Navy. A P-8 maritime patrol aircraft from the US Navy was dispatched to the location, where it played a crucial role by dropping a life raft near the sinking vessel and overseeing the evacuation process to ensure the crew’s safety.

The US Navy also coordinated efforts with MV Jabal Ali 9, a merchant vessel flying the St Kitts and Nevis flag, which was operating in proximity to the distress call. As the situation escalated and Virat 1 continued to take on water, all 14 crew members were successfully transferred to the life raft and subsequently rescued.

An official statement from the Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed that the crew members abandoned the ship safely following the engine failure. The embassy further noted that the rescue operations were being organized in collaboration with Omani authorities and nearby vessels.

Despite the loss of the Virat 1, the successful rescue operation ensured the safety of all 14 sailors. Ongoing assessments are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the Indian mission maintains communication with local authorities to provide necessary support for the rescued crew.

This incident underscores the critical importance of international maritime cooperation in emergency responses, reinforcing commitments to the safety of seafarers navigating busy shipping lanes in the region.
