Cope India 23, a bilateral air exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the United States Air Force (USAF), is currently underway at Air Force Stations Arjan Singh (Panagarh), Kalaikunda, and Agra. The exercise aims to improve mutual understanding and share best practices between the two Air Forces.
The first phase of the exercise began today. This phase of the exercise will focus on air mobility, with transport aircraft and Special Forces assets from both Air Forces participating. Both sides will use C-130J and C-17 aircraft, with the USAF also using an MC-130J. The exercise will also include the presence of Japanese Air Self-Defense Force aircrew who will serve as observers.
About Exercise Cope India
Cope India is a wargame series that began in 2004 as a fighter training exercise at Gwalior Air Station. In addition to fighter-training exercises, the exercise has grown over the years to include a variety of training activities such as subject matter expert exchanges, air mobility training, airdrop training, and large-force exercises. The last time the exercise was held was in 2019.
Previous Editions of Cope India
The previous edition of Exercise Cope India was held in December 2018 in India between the Indian Air Force and the United States Air Force. The exercise was scheduled to take place for the first time at two Air Force bases, Kalaikunda and Panagarh, from December 3 to 14, 2018. The IAF participated in the 2018 edition with its Su-30 MKI, Jaguar, Mirage 2000, C-130J, and AWACS aircraft, while the USAF participated with 12 F15 C/D and three C-130 aircraft.

So far, 2023 has been a busy year for the IAF, with several “firsts.” India and Japan held the first edition of the air exercise Veer Guardian, hosted by the JASDF, in January of this year. In terms of multilateral exercises, the IAF took part in Exercise Cobra Warrior in the United Kingdom for the first time in February of this year. The upcoming air wargames in the Exercise Cope India edition are expected to improve interoperability between the two air forces.
