In response to escalating tensions in the region following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) commenced Exercise Aakraman, a comprehensive combat readiness drill designed to simulate strikes on both mountain and ground targets. The exercise prominently showcases the IAF’s advanced frontline fighter jets, notably the Rafale and Su-30 MKI aircraft.
Defence sources have indicated that the drills encompass high-intensity operations, which include ground assaults and electronic warfare components. Aircraft have been redeployed from numerous airbases, with a particular focus on the eastern sector. The operations are primarily spearheaded by Rafale jets from two operational IAF squadrons located in Ambala and West Bengal.
“These missions are intricate in nature, necessitating real-time coordination, electronic countermeasures, and simulated engagements with ground targets across various terrains, including plains and high-altitude environments,” a source reported to ANI.
The exercise involves elite “Top Gun” pilots who are operating under the meticulous guidance of the Air Headquarters and seasoned instructors, demonstrating the enhanced operational capabilities of the IAF.
Central to India’s aerial strike capabilities during this drill are the Rafale fighters, which are outfitted with Meteor air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions such as Rampage and Rocks. The exercise draws parallels to the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, a pivotal moment that triggered significant modernization efforts within the Indian air combat fleet.
Complementing the Rafales and Su-30s, India’s aerial security grid is further reinforced by sophisticated systems like the S-400 Triumf air defence system. This enhancement provides a robust defense mechanism against potential threats from enemy aircraft and surveillance operations.
Amid these developments, Pakistan has conducted a surface-to-surface missile test near Karachi and executed live fire drills at the Tilla Range. Such military activities are perceived by analysts as indications of Pakistan’s posture in light of the growing bilateral strains.
In the wake of these tensions, India’s defence forces are on high alert, with increased surveillance measures and rapid response teams prepared for any potential incidents, according to official statements.
