The Indian Air Force (IAF) has embarked on a procurement initiative for a compact Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system specifically designed for its elite Garud Commando Force. This new system aims to enhance the surveillance and operational capabilities of the commando unit, particularly in challenging environments.
Officials have stated that the proposed UAV will be adapted for high-altitude operations, capable of flying at altitudes of up to 16,400 feet. It will also function efficiently in extreme temperature ranges, from -20°C to +50°C, making it suitable for diverse terrains and varying climatic conditions. The UAV’s primary functions will include high-altitude surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational support.
The upcoming UAV is set to feature an impressive mission range of at least 15 kilometers and a minimum endurance of 60 minutes. It will be equipped for both day and night surveillance, providing real-time situational awareness and efficient target acquisition. Notably, the system is designed to be man-portable and can be operated by a two-person crew, thus enhancing mobility and operational efficiency.
Advanced operational features are anticipated to be part of the UAV’s arsenal. These include autonomous vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), secure encrypted communication links, and the ability to operate effectively in GPS-denied environments. Furthermore, the UAV will be compatible with Indian navigation systems and will support multiple operational modes, including autonomous, manual, and target tracking.
Emphasizing indigenous development, the UAV project falls under the ‘Buy Indian’ and ‘IDDM’ (Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) categories, aiming for a minimum of 60% indigenous content. The Defence Ministry is keen to encourage participation from Indian vendors, particularly start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the realm of defense manufacturing.
The introduction of the upgraded UAV system is poised to significantly bolster the operational capabilities of the Garud Special Forces, particularly for high-risk missions in remote areas. This development underscores India’s commitment to integrating advanced unmanned systems, fostering indigenous innovation, and enhancing network-centric warfare capabilities within its armed forces.
