The Indian Army has received the first batch of Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks. The Toyota Hilux was subjected to a two-month rigorous test by the Indian Army’s Northern Command’s Technical Test Committee before being accepted into the fleet. It was tested in harsh terrain and extreme weather conditions, ranging from 13,000 feet in elevation to sub-zero temperatures.
Indian Army Adds Variety of Vehicles to its Fleet
The Indian Army’s fleet has included a variety of 4×4 vehicles, including the Maruti Gipsy, Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Safari Storme (GS800), and Tata Xenon pick-up, to name a few. The Hilux is the newest 4×4 to join the fleet, which is understandable given its off-road capability and Toyota’s legendary dependability. However, it is unknown whether the Army-spec Hilux has been changed in any way.
The Indian Army has acquired a fleet of Mahindra Scorpio Classics, which are expected to replace the older Maruti Gypsys that have served the Army for nearly two decades. The armed forces are also interested in incorporating EVs into their fleets, with the Indian Air Force recently purchasing 12 Tata Nexon EVs for its services.
Toyota Hilux: Engine And Specs
The Toyota Hilux is powered by a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that provides 204hp and 420Nm of torque (500Nm with the automatic). The Toyota Hilux is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
The Toyota Hilux comes standard with four-wheel drive, as well as a low-range transmission with front and rear electronic differential locks for increased off-road capability. It features a 29-degree approach angle and a 26-degree departure angle. The Toyota Hilux also features a 700mm water-wading capacity.
