Last year, the Indian Army began receiving delivery of the improved Dhanush howitzer, a critical milestone in the country’s artillery modernization efforts.
The Dhanush howitzer is based on technology transferred from the Bofors howitzers. AWEIL (Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited) delivered six Dhanush 15545 mm howitzers in 2019.

However, the firearms were later highlighted for quality flaws, resulting in a four-year production stop. During this time, technical concerns were resolved and the gun’s craftsmanship was improved. Deliveries of the remaining 114 guns, scheduled as replacements for the original Bofors howitzers purchased in the mid-1980s, commenced last year after rigorous retesting and approval.

Following the completion of the 114 Dhanush Howitzer delivery, the Indian Army intends to place orders for an additional 300 units, most likely in late 2024. The deployment of the Dhanush howitzers has already begun in the eastern Ladakh area, and further orders are likely to replace the Regiment of Artillery’s approximately 400 original Bofors cannons.
As India continues to modernise, indigenous manufacture and procurement of advanced artillery systems like the Dhanush howitzer will strengthen the country’s defence capability. These initiatives demonstrate India’s commitment to retaining a robust and technologically advanced armed force to protect its national security interests.
