The Northern Command of the Indian Army is currently hosting officers from the esteemed 54th Higher Command Course, an inter-service training initiative aimed at equipping senior military leaders with the skills necessary for complex operational responsibilities. This significant event is taking place at the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur. The program features a comprehensive briefing led by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, who has been serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief since April 2025.
During the briefing, Lt Gen Sharma elaborated on the myriad operational, logistical, and strategic challenges faced in the northern theatre, an area of paramount importance due to its sensitive borders with both Pakistan and China. He provided an in-depth analysis of the current security situation and offered valuable insights into future strategic planning. The Higher Command Course is affiliated with the Army War College located in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. Annually, it trains around 2,500 to 3,000 officers, a group that also includes individuals from paramilitary forces. Despite its professional significance, the course has not been without challenges. For example, in 2019, 18 colonels opted out of the program due to concerns regarding a mandatory five-year service bond, which ignited discussions surrounding officer retention and morale within the armed forces.
This visit forms part of a broader strategy aimed at bolstering inter-service coordination and enhancing joint warfare capabilities, a priority that gained prominence following the establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff role in 2020.
